i * admit, I was kind of thrown the first time
I LL I saw the name Ceramic Duck listed in
this magazine's ABC section. I had no idea of
what kind of band would be named after a fragile
porcelain object. Certainly not the uncompro
mising, hard-hitting outfit that has since altered
its name to the even more intriguing Ceramic
Dvck. At a recent skate-park benefit show, I was
blown away by the band's energetic, explanation-
defying weirdness.
All Dyck's musicians are highly adept per
formers; three of them constantly switch their
instruments, singing loud, fast songs which are
often non-metodic, but nonetheless intriguing.
Drummer-vocalist Stephen Miller admits to the
ironic leanings of the name. “We just chose it
because it was the stupidest name for a grindcore
band ever," he says. "We couldn't think of a less
appropriate name for what we do. There may or
may not be mystical aspects to the name."
Miller has been playing with most of the other
members of the experimental and artistically noisy
"tribal grindcore with keyboards outfit" for about
10 years. In addition to Miller, Jason Robira sings
and plays drums and guitar; sometimes Ceramic
Dvck has both Robira and Miller playing drums.
Jason Trahan plays keyboards; Bradford
Willingham plays bass and guitar, and Jorge Torres
plays guitar, bass and also sings.
All of the members of Ceramic Dvck, with the
exception of Willingham, hail from Lafayette, LA,
where, according to Miller, most of the bands tend
towards punk or metaL Within that scene, Robira
and Trahan started playing music when Miller was
a freshman in high school and they were seniors,
primarily out of necessity. "I was the only
unclaimed bass player in town," Miller says.
They formed the Urbosleeks, and toured out of
Lafayette for several years before moving to
Athens in 2000. "It has been 300 percent easier
to schedule shows since we now can say we come
from Athens," Miller says. "If you are from
Louisiana and you don't play the blues or zydeco,
and don't have an accordion in your band, no one
wants to book you."
Torres, who had played with Trahan in
Lafayette band Rare Avis moved to Athens within a
year, and soon after. Ceramic Duck formed, adding
local artist Willingham to their lineup. "There's
nothing like being in a band with your best
friends," says Miller, 'playing anything that we
want to and knowing that it works. It's liberating."
Ceramic Dvck has the requisite songs about
girts, bi»t a lot of the lyrics range wider, tackling
novels and Japanese movies. The guys say they're
currently at work on a three-song epic about Ryu
Murakami's novel Coin Locker Babies.
Due to high gas prices. Ceramic Dvck probably
won't be touring anytime soon, though the mem
bers say they'd like to play more in Atlanta, which
has a more established hardcore scene. Echoing a
sentiment of many local fans of heavy sounds,
Miller says. "I really want people to come to this
show, because maybe then the 40 Watt and other
venues will start scheduling other heavier acts in
Athens. Generally, I have to drive to Atlanta to
see the heavier acts I like, like Mastodon and
Suffocation." What they really want to do first
though, is scrape the money together to record.
Says Miller, "Our sound has changed so much
since our last record came out"
For now, the members of Ceramic Dvck are con
tent to play in as many bands as possible and to
keep making music Three members of the Dvck—
Miller, Trahan and Robira—play in Ginger
Envelope; Miller also plays in Venice is Sinking
and Garbage Island. Torres and Willingham devote
their spare time to making films and art "What
else would I do with my time?" Miller asks. "Td
play more if I didn't have to work."
