Over And Out Popular Athens band Falrbum Royals is calling it
quits after a final show on Sunday, May 15, since member Matt Lisle
is moving to Oregon in June. The show takes place on the roof of
the Athens Music Museum next to Wu/try Records, and is the latest
in their series of rooftop show;. Fairbum Royals, first formed in
2001, played a veritable ton of shows both here and out of town
and released three albums during their time together. Considering
that so many bands are comprised of the laziest creatures known to
man, three albums in four yeaTs is pretty damn incredible. The other
members of the band will continue with various projects; drummer
Jason Eshelman and guitarist Dave Weigtein will continue to do
time with the Eskimos, and Weiglein has also recently begun
playing with Nutria. Dave Kincaid and Wesley Black have not
made any plans that were available at press time.
If You're So Inclined...: For those of you craving a straight up
hippie band, I think I may have what you're looking for. Athens
band little Green Chairs will be playing some shows in the area
soon. The band's hosting the RiverJam 2005 at their Casa del Rio
house on Saturday, May 14, playing along with Liquid Sundrop,
Sursie and Barking Charlie. Then they're heading down to Atlanta's
Smith's Olde Bar on Saturday, May 21 and are back in Athens at
Diverse Universe (next to Azucaa on Tallassee Rd.) on Friday, May
27. As you might expect, the band's sound is one huge soup of
"jamming funk, fusion-rock, reggae, improv and jazz." LGC would
mix everything with the help of long-time Athens producer John
Keane. Maybe it's my own penchant for recording 10 songs in a day,
but six weeks sounds like an awfully long time—maybe this is their
King Crimson period. The full-length album is set for a Fall release.
Anyway, the next opportunity for folks to catch the band will be at
Music Midtown on the 99X/ Locals Only Stage (date and time yet to
be determined) and during AthFest on Friday, June 24, at Tasty
World. In other news, the band's Apr. 1 show over at the 40 Watt
(along with the Whigs and Boulevard) raised more than S3,000 for
Nuq's Space, and that's just awesome.
Speaking Of Which: Look, there's gonna be AthFest news nearly
every week until it passes. The live music lineup is looking
absolutely stellar this year. Seriously, as I look through it I see
very nearly every band that has impressed me over the past year
included. And this goes for veiy young bands as well as the more
established ones. Check out the schedule at www.athfestcom.
Get Some Motivation: Also, if you're looking to participate in the run
ning of AthFest then sign up to be a volunteer. There are specific
requirements for all volunteers, but there is absolutely something for
everyone, so please check it out More opportunities will very likely
crop up as the festival draws closer, also. This is a great way to get
involved with one of the neatest things our town has. See
www.athfest.com for specifics or email volunteering@athfestcom.
Dress It Up: Local R&B/ hip hop label DilUgaf Records is hosting a
black-and-white party at the Ocoitee County Civic Center on Friday,
May 13 at 8 p.m.; black-and-white as in, dress nice, black suit
white shi't cocktail dresses, /know? Tickets cost $30 per couple,
and the R&B/ soul act The Common People Bind provides the
music For more information, contact Dabo Management at 227-
1469 or 255-0233. While you're at it check out some of Dilligafs
recent releases; Repunza, De Slim, Aunna and Cover Girl all have
new discs out [Chris Kassiotis]
I Swear its Like Musical Crop Rotation: The rumored new band fea
turing ex-members of Athens bands Paper Lions and Maserati has
become a reality. Named Teenage Meth Lab, the members are Josh
Lott Chris McNeil and Justin Snyder (all from Paper Lions) along
with Coley Dennis (Maserati). Self-described as "Drive Lite Jehu
mixed with Motbriread," Teenage Meth Lab plays its debut show on
Monday, May 30, at the Caledonia Lounge.
Correction: Okay, so I screwed up last week. I meant to inform /all
that Kevin Sweeney will be performing guitar technician duties for
J. Masds, not Lou Bartow (who plays bass, anyway) on the
upcoming Dinosaur Jr. reunion tour. I have no idea what I was
thinking, so please don't ask me.
Back In The Saddle: Long-running Athens rock trio Hayride
returns for the first time since last year's AthFest! With the
departure of drummer Ballard Lesemann, Paul Trudeau (A,
ex-Harvey Milk) joins Nick Bfeili and the aforementioned
Kevin Sweeney on Friday, May 13 at the Caledonia Lounge.
Someone Give These Guys a Mandate: It's time for you folks
to pay attention again and get your votes in for the
Flagpole Athens Music Awards. The ballot will run in each
week's paper so you can grab one there or you can simply
vote on-line on Flagpole's nifty website, www.flagpole.com.
There are nominees in each category for the awards, repre
senting what a local music jury thought was the best of the
best from the past year, but you are free to write in your
own artists as welL Why? Because we at Flagpole are big
believers in freedom and all that Don't do any dumb stuff
like trying to stuff the ballot box because we have hyper-
aware ways of detecting that crap and any votes cast that
way will be tossed out AU awards will be presented during
the Flagpole Athens Music Awards Show at the Morton Theatre on
Thursday, June 23. Abo, I'm only going to mention this about three
more times, so jump on it now. Find the ballot on p. 14, or vote on
line over at www.flagpole.com/awards.

See This If At AU Possible: Local promoter Jomo Entertainment has
scored big time with the upcoming show by songwriter Richie
Havens. The term living legend is generaUy a non-appropriate
cliche, but in this case it's absolutely true. Havens, who has
released more than 25 albums and continues to tour like a young
rock star, is one of he few artists remaining from the Woodstock
Generation stiU worth your time and attention. His impassioned per
formances and distinctive guitar playing is something any music fan
should experience at least once. My first time seeing him was at the
1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, and I was blown
away. At only $15, this show is a steal too. He will play the
Georgia Theatre on Thursday, May 12. See ABC for more info.
Please keep your news coming in and I*U squeeze it back out

Summer is one of the best times for music in Athens. Sure,
AthFest blows everyone's skirt up, but it seems like the summer
reaUy sparks some creative element among our town's musicians,
and every year some new, cool stuff crops up. We're not in the thick
of it yet but here's some stuff that should serve as evidence to
what I speak. Please see court exhibits below...
The Blues Ain't Left Yet* Athens blues harmonica player Neal "Big
Daddy" Pattman died on Thursday, May 5. Born in Madison County,
Pattman lost his right arm in a wagon wheel at the age of nine.
Soon after, he learned his eccentric and animated harmonica style
from his father; in his teens, he began performing traditional
Southern blues in Athens. Releasing a number of albums in the
1990s, Pattman performed and recorded with blues names like Taj
Mahal Cootie Stark, Dave Peabody and Lee Konitz. Pattman was 79
years old. [Chris Hassiotis]
also like you to know that they "look out on their sound-scapes
with a sense of inner-peace and happiness." And, no, this is no
joke, either. For more details, please throw your root chakra over to
www.littlegreenchairs.com.
Jazzed Up: On Thursday, June 9, jazz guitarist Bill FristU returns to
Athens. Null's Space, where he's performing, is looking for some
volunteers to work the show, provide a back line, etc. Drop a line to
Dan Nettles over at Null's at 227-1515.
Y Not Skirting Around: Athens band Modem Skirts have seen its
banner fly higher and higher over this past year, so it seems apropos
for them to think about delivering some new music to their fans.
This week, the band enters the studio with Atlanta producer Geoff
Melkonian, recently responsible for recording tracks with Five Eight
and the Whigs. The Skirts plans to record for six weeks and then
The/U Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning: The fabulous
40 Watt hosts a "Gram Parsons Tribute Night" on Thursday,
May 12 and the activities lined up look pretty sweet. First
there will be a screening of Return To Sin City: A Tribute To
Gram Parsons. The newly released film which documents
twin tribute concerts honoring the late songwriter held in
July 2004 in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, CA, features
performances by Keith Richards, John Doe, Luanda
Williams, Steve Earle and Dwight Yoakam. After the film,
local musicians will do their own tribute to Parsons; players
so far include Kevin Lane, Dave Marr, Don Chambers,
Matthew Houck and Clay Leverett I could write for pages
on Parsons, the father of "cosmic American music" (which
was perverted by the label of "country-rock" and later the
label "Americana") who died in 1975, and his seemingly
limitless influence on subsequent generations of song
writers, but there's not enough room for that
