NO DOG
UNLEASHED (R) Theatrical surprises being the
rarity that they are nowadays. Jet Li's newest
flick, the heartwarming, contemplative, kick-ass
Unleashed, makes me glad I have a job that forces
me to see everything. Otherwise, I might have
written off this meaningful exploration of man's
inhumanity, which just so happens to possess the
year's best bone-cracking, physics-defying martial
artistry, as another in Li's long line of staid, for
mulaic (snap, crackle, plot device) thrillers. Gallic
filmmakers director
Louis Leterrier and
screenwriter Luc
Besson, in an attempt
to redeem their careers
after the ludicrous,
unentertaimng
Transporter, have made
Unleashed their
penance, and I have
forgiven them.
Leterrier's herky-jerky,
highly-stylized camera
work and subjective
aural soundscapes
(highlighted by Massive Jet U and Bob Hoskins
Attack's atmospheric
score) never obscure Li's talents, and Besson's
return to the source of his best work (La Femme
Nikita, The Professional), the violence seeping
through the cracks of domesticity, has reinvigo
rated his writing. Trained to be an animal since
childhood, Danny (Li) knows nothing but his cage,
his stuffed dog, a children's book on the alphabet,
and death, his master Bart (Bob Hoskins, a long
way from Detective Eddie Valiant) having used
brutality and degradation to dehumanize Danny
and turn him into a killer activated by the
removal of his collar.
Drew Wheeler
Yet fate intervenes when an accident releases
Danny into the world, where he meets blind piano
tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman) and his virtuoso
stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon). They open
his eyes to love, kisses, ice oeam and kindness.
Most importantly, they soothe this beast with
music, removing the figurative and the literal
collar from around his neck. Before you write off
the film due to its obvious symbolism and bevy of
platitudes, give Li, whose litheness and speed
remain unparalleled, a
chance to show off his
growing skills as an
actor. Li cannibalizes
his own immigrant
experience, external
ising Danny's internal
progression from unas
suming subservience to
self-possession through
walk, talk and facial
tics. Danny, at best a
frightened child and at
worst a dangerous cor
nered animal before
Sam and Victoria, hides
under beds and inside
himself, gradually losing his emotional restraints.
But Li fans will not be disappointed. The smalt
whirling dervish of fists and fury does not go soft
nor does the film. Li chops, socks, kicks and blud
geons his way through small armies of inter
changeable thugs, and Bart's malice pollutes even
the most precious moments, for his return is as
inevitable as it is undesirable. To be so engaged
with the characters of a film such as Unleashed is
the rarest of all cinematic surprises.
