Local band Virgin Box Set has
really kind of snook up on the
Athens music scene. Comprised of Jimmy Taylor (Iron Hero), Gabe Vodicka (American Erutrevo),
Winston Parker (American Erutrevo, ex-Life Is A Fight) and Justin Flowers, the band has a ready
stable of songs that are remarkably complete in both their conception and delivery. Most of the
time, side-project bands leave songs half finished. Worse, many barely get out of the starting
gate of the conception stage before the band starts playing live shows.
The members of Virgin Box Set seem to take all the aspects of being a band as seriously as if
it were the main project for each of them. Self-described as alternative grunge rock, the band
pulls from influences both fairly obvious (Smashing Pumpkins) and those not so obvious (Hum,
Neil Young). Guitarist and vocalist Taylor, who is currently undergoing a miraculous recovery after
being hit by a car last year, says, "This is honestly a band I think I've had in my head since I was
tike 15. It's just very therapeutic to try to make simplicity as effective as possible and not have
to think too hard while you're up there and iust have fint and get your point across. Virgin Bax
Set is a side project that doesn't take any time away from Iron Hero because Iron hero is the No.
1 priority. But after my accident* he continues. T just felt that getting up there and playing
these songs and screaming was very therapeutic and something I needed to do. Plus Gabe, Justin.
Winston and I are such great friends, it was just something we couldn't pass up.* (Gordon Lamb)
