Say it ain’t so, Don! Word is that this
is the final show for grizzled, high-volume,
whiskey-soaked Pig Iron. The local side
project fronted by Don Chambers Is appar
ently calling it a day ‘foe to band^en
pressing obligations. “So many social
engagements, so little time,' once
quipped a wise philosopher. I believe
name was John Goodman; the discourse
was called Raising Arizona.
AU of Pig Iron's members are indeed
moonlighters, though. Bassist Chuck
Bradbum is slso in Southern Bitch and -
Kimberley Morgan & the Everloving Band.
Drummer Jim Wilson bangs it out for
Mother Jackson and a host of other acts,
while guitarist Jason Korn—who, contrary
to earlier plans, has decided to remain an
Athens resident for the time being—can
be found among the ranks of Popkorn: and Lost Songs of Nitti. Chambers has also been playing
more shows as of late with his flagship band GOAT. “Don's been doing well with the GOAT thing,'
says Korn. 'Jim's got his hands foil playing in Mother Jackson and also doing merchandise for
the Ortve-By Truckers when they tour, and Chuck has Southern Bitch. So it's just a case of every
body getting really busy at the same time is atL'
When ashed what the band sounded tike, I once told somebody that Pig Iron was like
watching the Melvins strangle the Musde Shoals Swampers. Heavy and unhinged, the band puts
Chambers' raspy vocal chords even further through the grinder and features junkyard claptrap and
stage antics Orat'd make Tom waits grin—and the rest of us take an Ewedrin. Though their ine
briated reign was brief. Pig Iron turned in some memorable performances. Here's hoping the guys
