SLOAN SIMPSON
HAYRDE,
Friday. May 13
Caledonia Lounge
With this bill, you know one thing
for sure: you're going to get top-notch
stage banter. The rest, no-one knows
But luckily, this was a surprisingly *on*
night, and quite well-attended as
Hayride returned to the stage tor the first
time since June oftast year. Donkey
Punch opened with a powerhouse set in
spite oi being hampered by a missing
guitarist, a faulty mic stand and British
audience members The show was
solid, and loud ol course, but left me
wanting a lew more original songs from
the band as they've been improving in
that category steadily over the last
couple ol years. (Maybe it was a *We
don’t HAVE to play Six-String Sinner”
statement) That being said, however, ift
hard to argue with a Supersuckers
medley, and the band left the crowd less
highlight ot this evening* covers was
undoubtedly Escape (The Piha Cobda
Song).* rve been turning it for days •
now. and likely in my sleep as well. So,
who knows tftaf the next lineup of
Hayride will sound like when it takes the
stage at someyet-unannounced time in
the future? But if this show is any indi
cation, it wont be losing any steam.
Though maybe Bieili and Sweeney can
pitch in and buy Gerow a button-up
have shown up had they seen a name
bey recognized. Those ot us in tie know
were quite happy, though. The Russian
Futurists were . , welt, finished before I
arrived. Bull couktol miss Junior Boys.
The duoS stage presence was no match
for last year* brilliant List Exit, but sev
eral new tracks were debuted to make up
for it Their (M)-meets-M83 synth-pop
would have fared better actually inside
MJQ* main concourse.

Hayride’s Kevin Sweeney (top), Nick Bielli and Paul Trudeau (bottom)
sleepy and more packed that when it
started, so yeah, it did rock.
Next was Hayride The band tonight
featured constant members Nick Bielli
(AKA 'The heart of the band*) and Kevin
Sweeney (Acetate. Sunshine Fix) as well
as Paul Trudeau (A. Harvey Milk) on
drums. In the bands 15-year history,
this is the third time Trudeau has played
with them—and likely his final, as hell
be moving quite a ways from Athens in
August (Rumor has it that Dave Gerow
ot Ceiling Fan and The Sunshine Fix will
take over Hayride drumming duties in
the near future.) The band opened with
what is the best version of *Bucket
Brigade* I can ever remember hearing it
play. I mean, the song full out rocked
and announced immediately that
Hayride was in no way rusty. Later in the
night the band did the same with lets
Hear It For Me.* Though there was
maybe an original song or two that
dklnl stand out, this was really the best
set IVe heard the guys in Hayride ptay.
They seemed to perfectly nail every song
and had a room half-packed with musi
cians up-frort watefimg one of the most
musicaffy talented local rock grotps
around pby expert Ticks' and 'rifts.*
Of course, with every Hayride show,
you not only gel the aforementioned
brilliant banter ('This song is about
sperm, /air), but you also get to end
the night with a stream ot seemingly
randomly attempted cover songs. The
Zeppelin shirt to match theirs. Live long
and prosper, /all.

Drunken Unicom, A^nta
Somewhere there's an aging unM-
ented punk twirling his mustache sinis-
terty Last year. Handsome Dick
'Manitoba.* former frontman ot pre
punk band the Dictators, threatened to
sue Dan Snaith over SnaithS moniker,
also Manitoba. Never mind that
Handsome Dick had never released
music under the name in question or
that Manitoba Isa Canadian province.
Being an underground musician. Snaith
could not financially take the slim risk
that the crybaby Dick would actually
win. sc he swallowed his pride and
changed his alias to Caribou, an animal
one might see hundreds ot while in
Manitoba.
Snaith is currently touring in sup
port ot The Milk ol Human Kindness, his
first release under that new name, and
white there was a good turnout at MJQS
Drunken Unicom Room, one can only
wonder if several dozen more tans might
Finally. Snaith and his two touring
bandmates took the stage. Live, Caribou
sounds much more uniform than
Snaith* three disparate albums. With a
minimum of electronics on-stage,
anyone disappointed to hear only snip
pets of Smith's Warp-flavored debut
Start Broking My Heart just didn't get
it Caribou live is all about big open
sound and that psychedelic vibe Snaith
captured most stunningly on 20G3S Up
In Flames and which trickled down to
the more downbeat Human Kindness.
Many of the songs performed centered
around the two drummers, one ot whom
was Snaith himself, playing with such
obvious love and abandon tor the
instrument I was reminded ot Garth in
the music store in hfcyrw* World.
Cinderblocks were placed before each
drum kit and the reason was soon dear:
to stop both drum kits from ending up
in the crowd.,
A guitarist was placed front and
center, but Snaith ran (he show behind
his kit and sequencers, occasionally
calming tong enough to provide some
vocals. I wonl mention song titles here;
it was )ust one delirious hour-plus
tribal-pop session. Even if somewhere
out there, there ends up being a whlny,
lawyer-happy wannabe rock star named
■Caribou*—or a chain ot cofleeshops
in a litigious mood—Snaith seems
unstoppable.
