TOUR ATHENS ART
Under the umbrella of the Athens Area Art
Council, local galleries have joined forces to pre
sent a weekend of art. The following events and
exhibits are part of the third Tour Athens Art,
taking place Friday, June 10 and Saturday,
June 11.
► Color Theory: Aurum Studios (125 E. Clayton
St, 546-8826) will hold a wine and cheese recep
tion for the work of Holly Golsoti and Jon Rasula
on Friday, June 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Golson
is displaying luscious paintings on wood with
slight areas carved out The subtle three-dimen
sional quality of the carved plywood adds
tension to Colson's abstract shapes, which
vaguely suggest an aerial view of a garden,
with circles and squares denoting items of
interest around a central pathway. Golson,
who graduated from UGA with a BFA in
2000, has a group of small florals she refers
to as “Pocket Paintings." Both the “Pocket
Paintings" and her larger works have refer
ences to quilts, which solidifies the juxtapo
sition with Jon Rasula's bright, geometric,
quilted wall-hangings. In a departure from
his earlier fluid paintings of color abstrac
tions, Rasula's fabrics are tightly con
structed and intricate.
Friday Night: Down the street from Aurum,
Mercury Artworks (225 W. Clayton 5L, 546-
8559) will be hosting a reception from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 10 for an
exhibit of works on paper by the gallery's
artists. The Gallery Shop at Lyndon House
Arts Center (293 Hoyt SL, 613-3623) will
be hosting an Art Clearance Sale in the
lobby from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. At ATHICA
(Chase Street Warehouse #3, 208, 1613),
Trio Caveat will be performing at 8 p.m. Trio
Caveat is an improvising jazz ensemble from
New York with bassist James Ilgenfritz,
drummer John McLellan and saxophonist Jonathan
Moritz. See ABC for more info.
Headspinning: In coordination with AthFest
2005, the Lyndon House Arts Center has teamed
up with Nutf's Space to create an exhibit
focusing on the local music scene, titled
"Headspinning: Inspiration From The Canvas To
The Album Cover." “Headspinning" presents fine
art “alongside music album visuals that either
incorporated aspects of the artwork or were
inspired by it" Visual articts included in the
exhibit are Randy Bewley, Chris Billheimer,
Andy Cherewick, Stephanie Dodson, David
Fairbaim, Kevin Hoth, Lou Kregel, Andy
LeMaster, Jeff Owens and Sandra Lee Phipps.
Some of the albums included are from Elf Power,
Dodd Ferre lie, Drive-By Truckers, Five Eight
Michael, Now It's Overhead, R.LM.,
Phosphorescent Pylon and Sugar. In addition to
“Headspinning," a retrospective-style show of
work by Sunny Taylor and Michael Lachowski,
curated by former GMOA director Donald Keyes,
will be on view. Sunny Taylor will be exhibiting
watercolors and oils; and, Michael Lachowski, of
Candy, will display photographs and drawings. The
opening reception is for both shows is Saturday,
June 11, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Lyndon House
Gallery Shop will again be holding a clearance sale
on art items in the lobby from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Our Little Brothers and Sisters: The Gallery @
Good Dirt (510B N. Thomas St, 355-3161) will
host a reception for the documentary photographs
of Megan Resch, on Saturday, June 11, from 6
p.m. to 9 p.m. Resch is temporarily a local artist
making Athens her home for a brief time after
attending school in Kentucky and before moving
to Arizona in August She was called to Honduras
by a friend who volunteered at Nnestros Pequehos
Hermanos (Our Little Brothers and Sisters)
orphanage. Twenty photographs taken during her
visit in February will be on display. Prints of the
images will be for sale, with half of the proceeds
going back to Honduras. Resch, a Good Dirt Studio
Assistant will be available on Friday, June 17,
during a "meet the artist reception," from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m., to provide additional information about
the orphanage. Functional pieces by local potters
and pueblo-style pottery from Mata Ortiz. Mexico,
will also be on display.
Living in Colon "Living in Color," consisting of
pastels and oil paintings by Alan Stacker, is on
display at Original Fine Art Gallery, located
inside Elements Art Supply (1025 Baxter St.,
546-1310). Sleeker has been an active painter for
40 years, in which time he has also had an impres
sive career in television production and taught
telecommunications at UGA. With thick paint and
figurative references. Stecker's paintings are remi
niscent of Picasso or Chagall. 'Double Portrait"
utilizes collage elements to create a technically
rich image of two abstracted faces, one of which is
upside down. Represented by the familiar triangle
shape from children's art a young woman in a
printed dress is discerned through the clouds of
paint in "Conversation with a Dove." The dove is
staring at two other people having a conversation,
creating a mysterious fantastical environment of
enchantment The approximately 50 wprks in this
show have been created over the past decade.
Sacred Art Secular Context: The Georgia Museum
of Art (GMOA) participates in Tour Athens Art
with the exhibit "Sacred Art Secular Context."
which includes Byzantine objects embedded with
religious meaning used for secular purposes, such
as marketplace items. Some of the objects are
powerfully intricate. On Thursday, June 9, Eames
Demetrius will give a gallery talk. Next weekend,
GMOA will be hosting some exciting events.
Photographer Diane Arbus' exhibit opens, and
Charles Ritchie will give a presentation and a
guided tour through the exhibit of his sketch
books, drawings and prints. Call 542-4662 for
hours and more info.
Next Time: The next Tour Athens Art is scheduled
for October 14 and 15. Look for more on art at the
