Jonathan Richman
40 Watt Club
Jonathan Richman, now there's a
funny guy. He's not so much laugh-
out-loud funny, but the kind that
wins you over with dependable
showmanship. He sings love songs,
breakup songs, does weird dances,
does some kind of James Brown beg-
and-plead routine and lets drummer/
bongo player Tommy Larkins take the
lead. In fact, Richman hasn't reaUy
championed a full band in more than
a decade, preferring the minimal
accompaniment of his guitar and
Larkins' minimal cocktail drum kit
It's as though a hip bar mitzvah
band started booking bar gigs. And
tonight's show features two full setsl
Richman's 1976 debut with The
Modem Lovers, sealed by classics like
“Roadnmner" and "She Cracked,' is frequently acknowledged as an essential post-punh corner
stone, but there's still more to gain from his scattered catalog. The 2002 collection Acton $
Packed: The Best of Jonathon fckhman (Rounder) is a strong comp; ZOOVs Roadrurmer. The Jr.#
Besedrky Collection (Sanctuary) is the latest packaging of Richman and the Lovers' earty years, 4
time of late-70s aiit fandom highlighted by numerous examples of sloppy garage antics.

Other than having a title that’s a real tongue twister, it presents a familiar sensitive
really into art but also offers his views on more serious stuff.
The closest tiring rock ever had to an Andy Kaufman, Richman can easily take sentimentality
to the point of creepiness. Then he sings a song about Bigfbot or baseball or something and
wins you over again. Isn't that the mark of a fine showman, if not a
