SIDS, The Fugue,
Cinema Eye,
American Erutrevo
Caledonia Lounge
When Adam Stroup*,
vocalist for strident Athens/
Atlanta post-hardcore trio
SIDS explains, "We'r* not a
joke band, but we're not
serious either.’ his descrip
tion comes across as a bit
too ambiguous. 3ut witness
the group harness the
tawdry tension that arises
from acting out such conflicting adjectives, and live is where SIDS' personality truly takes shape.
Fronted by Stroupe alongside drummer- keyboard programmer Josh Fauver (Deer Hunter,
Electrosleep Inti) and bassist Erin Carmichael, the group's spontaneously eruptive shows are the
subject of much lip service. Setting up and performing on the floor in front of the stage, SIDS
reties on an up-front and confrontational mob scene where audience and entertainer become one
and the same.
Drawing comparisons to pioneering West Coast screamo acts Antioch Arrow, the Holy Molar
and the locust, the group revets in willful obscurity. Since the fast rise and swift decline of
Stroupe's raucous and rowdy suburban Atlanta adolescent hardcore act Camaro Crotch in October
of 2002, SIDS has remained somewhat of a specter on the local scene. To date, no recordings
have been made available and rumblings of a single being released haven’t been heard until
recently. If it weren't for the fact that people are talking about the group, there'd be tittle proof
that SIDS even existed.
But as Stroupe explains, the group is in no hurry to get the ball rotting. This summer, SIDS
will release its debut T single on Atlanta's Stidcfigure Records and Army of Bad Luck, with a
second single on Gocd Might Records to follow soon after. ’We're fine moving at the speed we're
moving ' Stroupe says. "This is a very relaxed band. We don't have any priorities as to what we're
going to do. There's no message we're trying to get out or anything tike that tts just a band to
have fun." [Chad Radford]
