After two years of hinting at his bold
potential to trade ticks with the vibrant
miasma of local alt-country rock bands like
Timber, The Chasers, Ken Will Horton, The
Bearfoot Hookers, etc., etc., etc, local lad
Andrew Kelson is clearing his schedule,
graduating from business school at UGA,
and launching himself headlong into the
aforementioned scene. While Nelson wants to stay true to his Southern roots and keep with
the South’s historic place in the evolution of blues jazz and rock, he's also very wary of being
too country for his young years.
Nelson has already recorded and shelved one album before retooling sans pedal steel,
and has recorded a trunkload of material that he says is more along the lines of Tom Petty
American pop-rock and folk. "I just want to sound like I'm from the South/ says Nelson,
"without sounding like I'm an idiot trying to fit in with any negative Southern cliches. It's
definitely been a lot more rock and roll lately/
With Nelson on his ambitious trip along the tightrope are guitarist Michael Ten Pas, bass
ist Brandon Oeesand, drummer-producer Jeremiah Edmonds (also of Atlanta's Manchester
Orchestra), collectively known as The Shotgun lovers. Earty cuts of songs like 'Dream Has Gone
Away” shows that Nelson & Co. are pursuing a worthwhile course, unearthing a vibrant and dy
namic vocal range as well as much fuller arrangements that swing Uke a well-oiled gate. Nelson
and band are looking forward to their first live radio show for WUGA, coming up in April which
Andrew hopes will feel a little "less naked" than being on-stage; a big night of shotgun lovin'
at the Caledonia Lounge, though, should prime audiences for just that [Ben Gerrard]
