avant-pop, and creates a confection of found
sounds and basement-tape bliss.
Carnes' inspiration comes from the natu
rally quirky tones that resonate from the
instruments at hand: "I tend to write a poem
and picture an instrument that goes with it," fill Carnes
she says, "and make them mesh together."
Her own voice lays the foundation for much of this approach. Carnes' cartoon-like croon
ing wavers through a web of childlike melodies and starry-eyed outbursts. Not quite grating
enough to agitate the nerves, but shrill enough to transcend easy digestion, her voice falls
somewhere between Lambchop (the sock puppet) and Chairy from "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." Of
Montreal tapped her to provide the voice of a butterfly on their album Coquelicot Asleep in the
Poppies, and Carnes' 2002 debut Lullaby For Worriers is littered with contributions from Neutral
Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum and Olivia Tremor Control's Eric Harris: the latter of has often accom
panied Thimble Circus for live performances.
These days. Thimble Circus is a solo act "I work 40 hours a week," explains Carnes, who
occasionally contributes cartoons to Flagpole. "That doesn't leave much time to coordinate
schedules." luring shows, Carnes sits on the floor, surrounded by a clutter of instruments, in
cluding a toy piano, a ukulele, acoustic guitar and various noise-making objects.
Harris' new band Diet Rock Star is also scheduled to perform alongside Thimble Circus on
the bill. "I like playing alone, but I asked Eric if he wants to play with me," she continues. "I
probably won't know if he will until I show up that night." Tonight's show is a benefit for the
