Okay, folks. Let's get the ball rolling right out of the gate this
week...
step up. For full details, please see www.hopeforagoldensummer.
com/newalbum.html.
Eastsiiiide: For those who haven't caught on yet, there's generally
some cool stuff going down at the Eastwood Pub, located over
on the east side of Athens. Owner and longtime local musician
David Lee has been working things for about a year, pushing for
earlier shows (generally starting around 9:30 p.m.). This Friday,
Feb. 24, for instance, the Pub is featuring a repeat performance of
a teaming between the Mike Watson Band and guitarist Tommy
Crain, who first paired up two months ago. Watson is an Atlanta*
based blues guy familiar around town, and Crain, currently of
the Crosstown Allstars, helped map out Southern rock with his
'60s group The Shadows, and performed for two decades with the
Charlie Daniels Band. Worth checking out if you're into bluesy
American rock.
V I'll Take The Short Road: Athens-based Celtic music group Short
Road Home will celebrate the release of its self-titled debut CD on
Saturday, Feb. 25 over at Little Kings. The band, which plays mu
sic inspired by the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, Canada
and Appalachia, will play for free, and the event is all-ages. The al
bum was recorded over at Downtown Athens Recording Company
with engineer Eric Friar and the band's own Rich Mullinax and
Short Road Home
Noel Bevertey. Musicians appearing on the album include Dale
Wechsler (fiddle), Beverley (mandolin, guitar, lead vocals), Ken
Ross (accordion), Daniel Promislow (guitar, harmony vocals),
Paul Matthews (penny whistle, percussion, lead vocals), Emily
Matthews (penny whistle), Mullinax (upright bass, harmony vo
cals) and Andrew Hunt (bodhran). Anything else you need to
know can be found over at www.shortroadhome.com.
On The Techno Tip: Longtime indie-pop honcho Darren Cloutier
has been running his on-line MP3 label named Bunch Of Beatniks
Riding A Rocket for about a year now, and the amount of Athens
music available for free on its website is amazing. And I never
use that word liyhtly. Special treats include the very first demo
from founding Kindercore Records band Kincaid (known then
as "The Real Ruben Kincaid") and stuff from Welterweight and
Je Suis France. The newest compilation available from the label.
Recycling the Throwaways, contains rare tracks from Masters of the
Hemisphere, The Mendoza Line, Folklore and Fairmount Fair,
among a bunch of others. You owe it to yourself to grab this stuff
over at www.bunchofbeatniks.blogspot.com.
A Storied Life: Speaking of that band. Folklore is up to some
stuff worth mentioning. The local pop band is wrapping up studio
recording sessions at the home of the Wee Turtles' Jon Croxton.
The full-length release will be called The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman
and, according to bandleader Jimmy Hughes, "tells a meandering
lineage of different eyewitness accounts of a ghost and the man
behind the hoax that became regional legend in northern New
York." In the meantime, pick up a copy of the band's self-released
EP Carpenter's Foils, available on CD-R at upcoming shows.
Order Up!: The popular Hope For Agoldensummer is currently
working on its next album and is putting the call out to fans. Folks
that want to help the band achieve the best possible recording are
invited to show some faith and pre-order the album now. Lots of
local bands have done this in the past—Bain Mattox, for example,
as well as Count—and it generally works quite swimmingly. The
deal is this: order the album, due to be released this summer, and
not only do you get your copy when it's ready, you also get a free
compilation of previously unreleased live and studio tracks. The
only way to get the compilation of rarities is by pre-ordering, so
Quiet On The Inside: Local singer-songwriter Adam Klein contin
ues to gain ground since re-tapping his way into the Athens music
scene a little over a year ago. He'll be playing over at Null's Space
on Saturday, Feb. 25, with Boston-based comedy troupe Late Night
Players and local band Bo Bedingfield & the Wydelles. Klein
will also open for Southern Bitch dude Adam Musick at Flicker on
Saturday, Mar. 4. Chances are good that Klein will deliver material
from his in-progress album, so get there early.
Best Party Of The Week: There is a very special event going down
this week. A birthday celebration for Sister Fleeta Mitchell
takes place on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miriam Moore
Community Center over in East Athens. Everyone is invited. Ms.
Mitchell's actual birthday is Monday, Feb. 27, but fans of the his
tory of Athens music will want to make sure to go by the party on
Friday and wish her a happy 93rd birthday. Mitchell, who was born
blind in 1913, mel her husband, the late Nathaniel Mitchell, in
1923 at the age of 10 at the Georgia Academy For The Blind; they
attended school with legendary blues musician Blind Willie McTell.
Married in 1936, the couple performed for 57 years until Nathaniel's
passing in 1991. Mitchell still plays her piano quite often, as she
has done since the age of five. She's an Athens trea
sure and an American folk legend of a very high or
der. As such, let's honor her by wishing her a happy
one. For more information, please call 548-5887.
Care Goes Around And Round: University of Georgia
student organization KARE (Katrina Assistance
and Recovery Efforts) is hosting a series of benefit
concerts and is planning a compilation CD to help
with relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. The first event
is Saturday, Feb. 25 at The Melting Point and will
feature the Randall Bramblett Band, Hackensaw
Boys and Little Brown Peach. Tickets are a very
reasonable SlO advance, $15 at the door. Advance
tickets can be had via the Melting Point. For more
information on this event and the organization,
please contact kare@uga.edu.
Back Home For A Moment: Former Athenian and
BreastFest founder Sara O'Brien is coming back
to town on Friday, Feb. 24 to celebrate the release of her newest
album Trampoline. She's bringing her old band with her, and other
performers include Heidi Hensley, NYC artist Don McCloskey and
Brian Connell & the Dickens. The event, which takes place at the
fabulous 40 Watt, will open up the club early for a rare "happy
hour" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that night and drink specials will be
served with proceeds to benefit BreastFest. So drink up, then get
down.
Ask, And Ye Shall Receive: If you hit up the Melting Point on
Friday, Feb. 24 to check out King Crimson / League of Crafty
Guitarists main man Robert Fripp, make sure not to bolt right
after the last ambient, soundscapy song is done. The unique and
talented guitarist will host a discussion and audience Q&A session
after his performance.
Lessons: On the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 25, Nug's Space will
host a hand-drumming workshop with instructor Kane Stanley.
Stanley, who plays with Cosmic Charlie and Entropy, attended the
Berklee College of Music and has studied folkloric drumming for
over 10 years, including a stint in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The cost
is $12 if you need a drum and $10 if you bring your own. All those
needing a drum provided must pre-register, but the other folks can
just drop on in. For more information, please see www.nuci.org.
Heidi Hensley, Take Note: Athens organization The Publishing
Company is a publishing administration company that deals with
music supervisors to place music in film, television, commercials
and video. They've recently worked to place music with "CSI: New
York" and in ads for Amstel, New Balance and Puma. Right now
they're seeking local musicians who have written music for kids to
contribute submissions for an upcoming project. It you're interest
ed, email Patrick Bozeman at thepublishingcompany@gmail.com.
