In an effort to bring
people out and to offer
the people who support
his live performances
something special, lo
cal singer-songwriter
Nate Nelson's new EP A
Sing-Song Fashion will
only be available at his
shows. "Well, the first
idea for this EP was to
make some demos to
send to record labels
and see what happens," says Nelson. "But as we got towards the end of the process, we all
looked at each other and just deeded that we had to release it because we were so happy
with it So what that turned into was the idea of releasing it but only sell it at shows and
then also send it out to record labels."
The five songs on A Sing-Song Fashion—recorded with local producer Andy Baker and with
instrumental backing provided by John Swint Phillip Brantley and JoJo Glidewell (three quar
ters of local pop band Modern Skirts)—see Nelson take a broader approach to his songwriting,
moving beyond the personal immediacy of his 2004 album Random Acts. "A couple of days be
fore I went back in the studio. I listened to Random Acts, m says Nelson, whose new recordings
bring his guitar, piano and alternately sweet and rough-edged vocals to the forefront. "What
I heard was a 16-year-old kid singing songs about love and everyday experiences, things that
are very literal and out in the open for anyone and everyone to take... When I write some
thing Uteral now, it's done to get a certain point across."
Currently interning at the Chase Park Transduction studio with David Barbe and Andy
LeMaster. Nelson is learning the behind-the-scenes workings of recording while also focus
ing on finishing up another full-length album, with plans to release it this falL Though the
free Hot Comer show will be a solo performance. Nelson's also currently looking for a backing
band, so, /know, eyes peeled, ears lo the ground and all that (Chris Hassiotis)
