Megaband,
Building the State
Caledonia Lounge
elty act. but remember this:
that a dude dressed in an ape
costume singing along to an
8-track player could sufficiently
entertain the townie popula
tion for years (multiple ones!)
in the late '90s speaks to a bar
set low. And so then there's Megaband
Contraband, a group featur
ing the members of Cinemechanica performing the soundtrack to the Nintendo Entertainment
System game Contra as friends played the game on a projected screen. The local band received
a bit of Internet notoriety, with videos of their performances passing through gamer message
boards. Now there's Megaband. The group will deliver the songs of 1989 NES classic Mega Man
2, in which a plucky blue android battles a variety of enemies like Wood Man and Bubble Man,
each accompanied by individual theme songs.
*Mega Man 2 has a more dynamic set of music on the whole, with heavy use of the gal-
fop beat," says guitarist Bryant Williamson. "Contraband was definitely a little more rocking
on the whole. Comparatively, Megaband should be a way better experience... a 40-minute
set compared to a 15-minute set and 18 or so songs compared to eight in Contraband."
Megaband matches Williamson and his Cinemechanica bandmates Andy Pruett and Mike
Albanese with Coulter's Brion Kennedy, while Contraband's Noah McCarthy mans the controller.
Williamson says that in all the run-throughs of the game—a favorite of fans of the Mega
Man series, and one known for its challenge—McCarthy has died only once: The band has had
suggestions for other game soundtracks to tackle; Williamson dismisses the musically repetitive
nature of Super Mono Brothers and Hike Tyson's Punch Out!, but hints at the potential Ninja
Goiden holds: "Great music, great game." he says. "Unfortunately, the game is as hard as hell
and the music is equally as difficult Who knows, maybe we could putt it off." {Chris Hassiotis]
