THE LIBERTINE (R) Laurt.ce
Dunmore’s filmed adaptation of
Stephen Jeffreys' historical stage
play about John Wilmot. the Earl of
Rochester, a famed debauchee poet,
and annoyance to the English crown,
is a flaccid exercise in sub-erotic
pretension. Despite spurts ol wit and
genuine tactual nuggets, this bit ot
faux pornography—with a core soft
as talc—beginning with Wilmot (an
unsurprisingly superb Johnny Depp,
thankfully) boasting ot his own unlik-
ability and ending with him sounding
beseechingly like Sally Field, sets itself
a difficult task, flogging a character so
unapologetically specious Depp ef
fectively mugs for the camera, blowing
life into this drooping member of the
newty-iormed Weinstein Company.
Despite the obviously bogus probos
cis. John Malkovich fashions a striking
portrayal of Charles II. The Libertine
wishes for filiation but achieves te

MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION (PG-
13) Even with ador-writer-producer
Tyler Perry taking over directing du
ties. Madea's Family Reunion is little
changed from last year’s Diary ot a Mad
Black Woman. The near painful shifts
