Through Cats
40 Watt Club
Vicariously Through Cats is
underrated. I'm not sure if it's
because the members aren't
obnoxious enough to harass a
million people on MySpace, or
if they don't play enough shows
(well, I do know they don’t do
that), but if you see them play,
you'll probably fall a little bit in
love. Frontwoman Heather Heyn
is a dream on the guitar, and
her voice is a force that pulls
you in with its quiet, secretive,
lullaby bits and then blows ycu away with her powerful roar. There's something a little remi
niscent of the whole grunge heyday about Vicariously Through Cats, and I'm not sure if it's
intentional, or if it just springs from the natural way the band rocks out capably and unas
sumingly. The group is vibrant on-stage without resorting to the tired, detached electro-clash
facade behind which too many rock outfits with cute girl singers hide.
Heyn, formerly of Scorn for Sega and Peristalis, currently plays with Heros Severum. She is
backed by Forrest Leffer (ex-Carrie Nations), who annihilates the drums and the cymbals placed
way above his head; bassist Aaron Jollay, who is also in Col Knowledge 8. the Lickity-Splits,
Folklore and Thunder Thighs, among other band?; and fierce guitar man Asa Leffer (Let's Surf
and Michael). The entire band, save for Asa, also does time in rrck behemoth Dark Meat.
Vicariously Through Cats, which formed in early 2005 and for a while also included brass-
man Robbie Cucharrio, originally served as a vehicle to electrify the acoustic songs that Heyn
wrote on her own. Eventually, though, it came to include Jolla/s contributions when his songs
didn't fit with his many other bands.-Heyn and Jolla/s songs are pretty and sincere, but when
the full band gets behind them, they build to an intensity that will make you want to shout
along. It's easy to give in. [Bunny McintoshJ
