Ted Leo -i- Pharmacists,
The Duke Spirit, Les Aus
40 Watt Club
Whatever is a rock writer to
make of Mr. Ted Leo? Since 2001's
The Tyranny Of Distance (Lookout!),
and really since his work with his
former band Chisel, few contempo
rary artists have enjoyed such con
sistently splendid word of mouth
as this Jersey lad. His thorny
hooks and crypto-political lyrics
endear him to the punks. He's got Ted Leo + Pharmacists
Alex Chilton's flair for melody and
a smooth, clear voice to match, so the mods and classicists love him, too. Seldom has a live
act left so many new fans in its wake.
Don't expect Leo to take the easy road. He's a strict vegan. His songs are often dark and
confessional, but he never descends to the slop-puddle of "emo.' While ever-infused with DC
punk, Leo's music always comes out pure-pop in spite of itself. On 2004's Shake The Sheets,
released weeks before George W. Bush's re-election, he laid out a piercing critique of the cur
rent administration, not a particularly ballsy move for a rock musician, but a hard thing to
pull off with class, which he did. And now, when Leo is arguably poised to become the new
Springsteen and probably has his pick of the majors, he has signed with Touch & Go, the same
long-struggling indie that was crippled by the Butthole Surfers' lawyers a few years ago.
When Leo does phone it in, it's only in the literal sense; in early 2006, he called up the
phone-prank comedy program The Best Show On WPMU to rap-battle recurring character MC
Steinberg. He keeps a semi-regular blog on his Website, where, as a declared bitchslap to the
RIAA, he solicits guitar tabs from his fans. But he's not doing interviews for this tour, so we're
left to put thoughts in his head. So it often is. (Emerson Dameron]
