Bicycles & Gravel, Lazer
Attack, Red Ribbon Army
Lunch Paper
Local band Bicycles & Gravel
has been slowly garnering a more
attentive audience over the past
year, and deservedly so. Early shows
seemed slightly shaky and nervous,
but more recent performances have
been marked by a sense of confi
dence. Good thing, too, because
the band's brand of indie-pop is a Bicycle* I Gravel
refreshing breath of air in a town
that hasn't really been associated with such for several years.
Forming from the ashes of local band The Quiet in the summer of 2005, Bicycles &
Gravel—Jesse Thompson (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Tim Denson (guitars, vocals), Kathleen
Thompson (drums, vocals, cello), Leo Ashline (bass), Erroyl McGinfy (trumpet) and Danny
Padgett (various instruments)--laid low for a while and then recorded the debut EP God Don't
Like Poetry. As a member of the Branch Collection, recently formed between local labels Just
Me and Poorfish along with NYC label Dominant Fiction, the band will head out for two weeks
this summer. "The Branch Collection is a music and art collective," says Jesse. "Bicycles &
Gravel will be taking all of the music releases and art of the Collection on the road."
Musically, Bicycles & Gravel occupies the melancholy end of the indie spectrum. Fans of lo
cal acts such as An Epic At Best or Venice is Sinking will most likely find themselves pleased
with Bicycles & Gravel. "With this band we are finding our face in the scene and trying to
make our presence known," says Jesse. "We feel we fit in with the community tnat is still try
ing to put out music with a DIY spirit, either through handmade covers, or 'zines, or paintings,
art or whatever... the folks that are trying make things interesting and fun." [Gordon Lamb]
