Tino Garrido
Farm 255
The crickets chirp,
bulbous fairy lights as
sume a honeyed glow
against a fading dusky
sky and people sit to
consume locally-grown
organic fare and fine
music. Meanwhile, like a
sculpture, Tino Garrido
looks like he was bon
to sit, guitar in hand,
silhouetted against this
night sky providing an
audible fresco, as his
sweet supple classical
guitar cuts through the
humidity, intercepting the wingbeats of hovering mosquitoes with pin-pint precision.
Known for his work with the iocai musical phenomenon Grogus, tonight Garrido is without
his many comrades, but he is no less at home eschewing timeless Southern European and
Spanish-sounding staccato soliloquies. Garrido oozes poise, technique, control and an under
stated flamboyance as he exhibits the c impositions of fellow Venezuelan Antonio Laura. This
is the music Garrido grew up with in what he refers to as a "nylon-string culture." Sitting at
the bar between sets, Garrido goes on to say, "Put a steel-string guitar in my hands and I'm
lost." But in his element, Garrido is anything but
After two sets of beautifully restrained guitar work, Garrido picks up his cuatro, a small
Puerto Rican/ Venezuelan-style guitar, and lets loose with an incredibly fast strum. His right
hand becomes a blur arid his flamboyancy is far less understated. This outburst serves as a
marker to indicate a change in the road, and music from Cuba and the Dominican Republic
ensues with light vocal accompaniment the likes of which fans of The Bueno Vista Social Club
will find familiar. In an instant Garrido sweeps you away like a flash of tight almost as a re
ward for your patience, but then the show is over and ali that is left is to reminisce. But then,
he's playing again tonight starting at 8 p.m. [Ben Gerrard]
