GONE TO THE DAWGS
Pushcart: After seeing a flyer posted for La
Fonda Dawgs in Park Hall on the UGA campus
that promised all kinds of good things to eat
across from the Main Library on Jackson Street. I
went in search a few weeks ago, braving the gen
erally horrific weather—only to be forced to eat
my homemade turkey sandwich, after all.
The second try, despite being unplanned,
was much more successful. Stepping off the bus
on a windy day, about to cress the street to the
library, a tantalizing smell of the grill tickled my
olfactory nerves, and. much like Toucan Sam, I
j couldn’t help but follow it. It turns out the side-
j walk-based business is more in front of the little
cemetery on campus than the Lamar Dodd School
of Art. and I’m guessing a blustery day directs
numerous customers to its striped awning and
array of hot lunch items, which includes burgers,
hot dogs, tofu dogs and a grilled pork chop sand
wich, each a mere $2. •
A cooler of sodas, a table with an array of
bagged salty snack products (chips, Cheetos,
] Doritos), a table on the other side with plenty
i of condiment options and. shortly before
; Halloween, a plastic pumpkin full of candy for
! the taking, rounded out the food choices. You'll
j probably have to wait a few minutes for your
order to be readied, but the radio tuned to The
! River and the chatty fellow working the grill
i supply enough entertainment even for the im-
j patient.
The pork chop sandwich is simplicity itself—a
I pork chop rubbed with lemon pepper and placed
| between two slices of Sunbeam white bread,
i grilled briefly, as well. Was it the most perfect
j chop I’ve ever had? Tender, delicately flavored
| and from an organically-farmed, happy pig? It
• was not. but keep in mind, yet again, that it was
$2. Is there anywhere else in town you can get
any kind of sandwich, let alone a large and sat
isfying one, for what amounts to pocket change?
As a connoisseur of the cheap, as well as the
delicious, I think I can state that, unless your
momma made it and charged you for the ingre
dients, there is probably not. La Fonda Dawgs
seems to be up and running most days at the
lunch hour and runs a cash-based system.
Seoul Food: Wher I first heard about Eat Hibachi
opening across from Taste of India downtown
(at 131 E. Broad St., 706-548-7441). I admit I
could have been more enthusiastic. “Hibachi''
tends to mean 'Japanese food for Americans
who like to see things flipped in the air.' and
while I certainly like grilled meats and veggies
(see above). I'd always prefer that Athens move
in the direction of more authentic ethnic dining
experiences.
But. friends. Eat Hibachi has indeed moved
us in that direction when it comes to Korean
food. The brothers Kim and their family have
renovated the former market space, adding a
hardwood floor, an open kitchen and a simple
ordering system; the menu board above the
counter contains a numbered picture of each
orderable item: teriyaki beef, shrimp, salmon,
chicken and combinations; spicy chicken; bulgogi
(tender, sesame-sprinkled pieces of barbecued
beef); bi-bim-bob (which you may have seen in
many different transliterations but means “mixed
rice" and is essentially a big bowl of rice topped
with grilled meat, vegetables and softly fried egg
and served with a spicy red sauce on the side;
the iceberg lettuce included with Eat Hibachi's
version and the sliced carrots could be of better
quality, but the egg is cooked perfectly, meaning
you should break the yolk so it soaks into the
rice and shovel as many ingredients at a time
into your mouth); there's also yakisoba (soba
noodles with chicken and veggies); Kobi fried
rice; jab-chae (glass noodles); and LA ribs. Miso
soup, egg roll', and kyoza (i.e.. fried pot stick
ers, but smaller and more delicate than what you
usually get) can be ordered as side items, and an
array of sauces, including Sriracha, awaits on the
counter.
The rice is another area needing some im
provement. but the meats are all very nicely
done. Speed is something they’re working on,
and one can expect it to go up considerably once
the place has been open for more than a few
days; still, it's not hard to twiddle your thumbs
for a few extra minutes when this stuff is the end
result. Eat Hibachi is open for lunch and dinner
every day and takes credit cards. They also do
plenty of to-go business.
What Up?: Word is the former Mia Madonna/
Rouge location downtown is going to be a tapas
restaurant in the near future. Chef Meredith
McLucas has started a new personal chef service.
Happy Cnef in which she will come to your
house and prepare a gourmet meal. For more
