Bain Mattox
Flicker Theatre & Bar
Hooray for fast turnarounds,
where a song can go from an
idea in someone's head to an
album in someone's stereo in
less than two months. That's
the case with Bird in the Hand,
the new solo album from local
pop troubadour Bain Mattox.
Mattox recorded the songs
over six days in December with
producer and across-the-street
neighbor John Keane. "There's
a reason he's called 'the leg
endary' John Keane," says Mattox. "It became something I didn't expect it to become... I was
thinking of maybe doing some demo tracks, but we didn't try too hard for it to be one thing
or another in the studio, and it turned out to be solid enough to be an album."
Flagpole has only heard two of the nine songs on Bird in the Hand, but they hint at a
collection more sparse and intimate than Mattox's past full-tilt rockers. The downturn in
both volume and studio gloss allows the songs to shine through, and emphasizes Mattox's
ever-present-but-sometimes-obscured love of folk instrumentation and playful arrangements.
Mattox says he recorded the entire disc himself, with only occasional help on backing vocals
from Tin Cup Prophette's Amanda Kapousouz.
Tonight's performance at Ricker will feature Mattox accompanied by his bandmate and
bassist Michael Lamond. "The songs were written for two to perform," says Mattox, "and
Michael will handle the stuff I did on the record that I won't be able to do live." A brief re
gional tour with this stripped-down lineup sees Mattox venture no further than North Carolina
and Alabama, though a full-band is in the works for April and May, followed by another sum
mer solo tour. Copies of Bird in the Hand will be available for S10; the show starts at 8:30 p.m.
