continued from page 25 THE WOGGLES (40 Watl) Seriously? 1998 was the last time the Woggles played in Athens? Seems we ve got some catching up to do. See p. 32. Friday, Feb. 9 BITCH SWITCH (Go Bar) Mandy Jane—DJ Repramanda, local singer, sculptor and burlesque dancer—and Sandice Adina—OJ Sandelous, local heavy metal karaoke champ, ex-cheer leader and kung-tu angel—spin thick dance grooves to shake your sexy back. BUNG THE CHILDREN BACK HOME (Georgia Theatre) Local hip-hop with a strong love of fun and tongue firmly planted in cheek (sometimes); the rap stylings aim for humor, although the music is strongly grooving and based in funk. DON CHAMBERS (40 Watt) Local guitarist-banjoist Don Chambers gets a lot of comparisons to Tom Waits, but that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Chambers’ songs have the closing- time chic of Waits, sure, but there's a dusty undercurrent of sin and salvation that's more in line with Johnny Cash or Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous. DJ BLAZE (The Library) DJ Blaze, who has held down the wheels of steel at The Annex and last summer's “Classic City Hip-Hop,* hosts tonight's dance party, mixing contemporary hip-hop with older favorites and some unex pected forays into other genres DJ JOHNNY D (Loft) One of The Lott Lounge's rotating crew of house deejays, Johnny D—whom you may recognize from Atlanta's 95.5 The Beat or South Carolina’s Hot 98.1 FM—lays down the new dance sounds, heavy on the hip-hop every Friday night. VA. has played 3 “revue of rough-and- ready original and traditional tunes courtesy of the spiritually invigorating release of vibrating strings stretched over wood and vocal chords stretched to their limit.* IRREVERSIBLE (Caledonia) This Atlanta metal band's five-track EP Age shows a lot of promise. The guys bend a willingness to explore into their sounds, adding Pink Floyd guitar washes and a layered rhythm section into dark realms that should appeal to fans of Pelican and such. “IT’S FRIDAY” (WUGA. 91.7 FM) Every Friday at 4 p.m. Today's perfor mance Pam Blanchard & Sunny- Side Up Band “KARAOKE" (Melt's) Every Friday OF LEGEND (Caledonia) This five- piece hardcore band (now completely local!) lays down the hard and heavy, trudging through tracks off its self- titled debut album. OVERDOSE (Caledonia) Thundering metal four-piece from Kennesaw, GA PERMAGRIN (Mercury Lounge) Schooled in the New Orleans under ground, drummer Louis Romanos (now an Athens resident) and guitar ist/ composer Dan Sumner draw on influences as diverse as street beats, jazz, bebop and R&B, but the duo cre ates something versatile, lyrical and dextrous with its live electronic music. 8 30 p.m. RUSTWOOD (Foxz) Formerly known as The Husbands, this local trio per forms a set of its rootsy. catchy tunes, usually mixing both acoustic and elec tric performances SQUAT (Tasty World) Local improv/ jazz combo Squat celebrated its 10th year together with the release of the r et- rospective album Recycled 1994-2004 The steady-gigging band now has a new studio record wrapped and ready to go. expect the self-titled disc later this month Tonight's show is part of a benefit for local mission church The Sparrow's Nest and non-profit, faith- based organization Revolve, a little more info on p 37. THE SHOW IS THE RAINBOW (Go Bar) The Show is the Rainbow is Nebraskan Darren Keen's one-man electrofunk hip-hop freakout, a flashy depraved freak show of confrontational inside jokes and takedowns of the general human experience (often quite miserable, but most always funny). Saturday, February 10 Music Hates You, Zoroaster, Christine Caledonia Lounge I «>* a# fe ! 1 ^ T * ,* v ; m I . i *■ Zoroaster ■ ' v ^l i. 4 . If metatis a dish best served loud, then Atlanta's Zoroaster is a guitar-shaped turkey fresh out of the am plifier over., basted with drum sauce and served too- hot-to-handle on a Tolex platter. While Zoroaster's members are clearly students of the Sleep school of heavy metal cuisine (the members of Sleep having been ardent disciples of the methods of Black Sabbath), the rattling of eye andleeth that Zoroaster delivers to those standing in the right spot in the audience is an ex perience that merits the short trip away from your home stereo. Expect repetition of detuned, super-slow and cranked-up blues-rock riffs in the style of the ancient masters. This is music that is as much for blissing out in the comer as it is for head banging. ''Stoner" rock, some call it, but the effect of the music can be druggy enough on its own. As evidenced at a show last November at Repent, new drummer Dan Scanlan gives the songs a much greater propulsion in the live setting than what they achieve on Zoroaster's self- titled debut EP, which was recorded before Scanlan joined. Almost in spite of the feet that I've personally declared that volume, on its own, should no longer be considered a virtue, I found my hair swinging and my air guitar blazing throughout much of that show. In the old days, Metallica was known for being an excessively loud band, and it attributed this loudness to a desire to keep people from talking over the band's music. I can't say for sure if Zoroaster shares this aspiration, but be forewarned that this is not a show for the idle socialite, and these guys do not have swoopy haircuts or dreams of MTV2. Bring earplugs, or you bring infernal death upon your pillaged ears! [Jace Bartet] VERSATILIANS (Little Kings) Versatiiians hail from Monroe and bring a scattershot collection of origi nal songs ranging from the acoustic folk-rock to dirty blues-rock and work ing in covers of folks like the Stones, Pink Floyd and Tom Petty (a^d even former Athenian Jennifer Nettles) “WOMEN OF ROCK IN THE ROUND" (Melting Point) Tonight's Melting Point show features a trio of Atlanta songwriters sharing a stage and performing in the round Swing by and you'll find Caroline Aiken, a powerhouse of the Decatur coffeeshop- folk music crowd Donna Hopkins the bluesy singer usually found fronting her own band and conjuring comparisons to John Lee Hooker and Billy Gibbons; and soulful acoustic songwriter Diane Durrett WRONG WAY (Wild Wing Cate) Covering the music of weed-rockers Sublime YIP-YIP (Go Bar) Playing keyboard rock that swings from charming to vaguely irritating. Florida duo Yip-Yip (Jason Temple and Brian Esser) make dance tunes relying on the keytar and drum machines The new synthy album In the Reptile House conjures thoughts of Human League playing Atari games Saturday, Feb. 10 “ANTI-VALENTINE’S BATTLE OF THE BANDS" (Repent) Local roller derby crew Classic City Rollergirls hosts tonight's battle of the bands at the downtown watering hole The $5 cover benefits the group's future endeavors, and performers include Before the Solstice (10 p m ).
