The band exploits interesting dynamics, contrasting’front- woman Stevie Bailey’s sweeter croon with the gruff backing vocals of bassist Devin Pena. Add a little lap steel, and you’ve got the new album Badasser CROOKED TOMS (Amici) Kevin Fleming and Drew O'Donnell (of the band Of Mirth And Matter) perform as a duo, delivering covers and originals. 11 p.m. OAN MELCHIOR UND DAS MENACE (Little Kings) Based out of Durham, NC (by way of London), Dan Melchior and his band plays reverby, moody-sounding garage rxk in the style of the '60s greats. “Elev to Mezz' is the new single out on Daggerman Records DJ BLAZE (The Library) DJ Blaze, who has held down the wheels of steel at The Annex and last summer's ‘Classic City Hip-Hop,’ hosts tonight's dance party, mixing contemporary hip-hop with older favorites and some unex pected forays into other genres. DJ BOBBY C (Loft) Local deejay ^ Bobby Casille drop tonight's dance tunes for your feet and your ass DJ MARK BELL (8e's) Starting at midnight every Friday and Saturday, local deejay Mark Bell focuses on the dander sounds of 20 years ago. DJ TOMMY SALMON (Repent) Local bassist Tommy Salmon (The High Caliber, ex-Trinket) takes over the bars speakers as he selects the evening's music. Every Friday and Saturday 8-TRACK GORILLA & THE LOVE HANDLES (Little Kings) The schtick is this: local scenester and music dude dresses up in a gorilla costume and ‘sings’ along to 70s-era 8-track tapes More of a thing around the turn of the millennium and just prior, the Ape's back tonight with his backing vocalists and dancers The Love Handles to... entertain? “KARAOKE" (Eastwood Pub) Every Saturday. “KARAOKE" (Mell's) Every Saturday “LATENITE DISCO" (Go Bar) The house deejay spins a cool mix of disco. New Wave and modern dance tunes for a sweaty and energetic crowd. Every Saturday, 10 p.m. KRISTY LEE (Detour) Playing folksy acoustic tunes with a slight country lilt, songwriter Kristy Lee hails from Bay Minette, AL. MUSIC HATES YOU (Caledonia) This brutal metal act has gained the respect of those in town eager to raise a fist against all that troubles them. High energy and higher volume from Icudmongers Noah Ray (guitar, vocals), Zaxx Hembree (guitar), Forest Hetland (bass) and Patrick Ferguson (drums). The new album is the powerful Send More Paramedics. PERMAGRIN (Farm 255) Schxled in the New Orleans underground, drum mer Louis Romanos (now an Athens resident) and guitarist-composer Dan Sumner draw on influences as diverse as street beats, jazz, bebop and R&B, but the duo creates something versa tile, lyrical and dextrous with its live electronic music. PERPETUAL GROOVE (Georgia Theatre) These former Savannahians have been stirring crowds into a frenzy around the Southeast with their high- energy jams and spirited cover tunes. But they liked Athens so much they picked up and moved here earlier this year! All This Everything and Sweet Oblivious Antidote ate the most recent albums. “SALSA NIGHT" (Tasty World) Latin dancing hosted by local promoters Chamo Events. 9:30 p.m. Upstairs, every Soiurday night. ED SMITH (Cups Coffee Cafe) Classical guitar and perhaps some improv work from local musician Ed Smith (Menage a Twang, Wild Sunflowers, etc). THE SUEX EFFECT (Amici) The trio of guitarist-vocalist Ricky Barrett, drummer Jonathan Daniels and bass ist Miles Karp describes itself as an ‘original utility-rock power trio blend ing psychedelic sounds from funk, rock, blues and reggae * TIGER! TIGER! (Little Kings) Making its Athens debut, the Atlanta band Tiger! Tiger! delves into seriously seri ous revivalist garage rxk, churning out catchy tunes heavily influenced by '60s girl groups and rock-and-rollers on its upcoming sophomore disc Beyond Your Mind. See Box TIN CUP PROPHETTE (40 Watt) Local artist Amanda Kapousouz blends genres as she switches instruments, Ixps her airy vocals and violin around guitar and drums. The full band fea tures Daniel Rickard (Suny Lyons, The Low Lows). Jeremy Wheatley (The Low Lows. Heidi Hensley Band) and Sara-J Ursrey (The Ones). Last year's debut album is the enchanting Liar and the Thief, and there's also the unofficial* EP of Celtic tunes Calling the Oceans By Name VAN MORRISON TRIBUTE (Melting Point) Featuring Augusta songwriter Greg Hester backed by a seasoned band, the Van Morrison Tribute is pretty much what you'd expect: a soul ful run through the varied career of Mr Morrison. VENICE IS SINKING TRIO (40 Watt) Daniel Lawson, Karolyn Troupe and James Sewell play a low-key. acoustic set of Venice Is Sinking songs. The stripped-down presentation will include just guitar, viola, trumpet and some piano, with much sparser ar rangements than is typical of the lush pop group. Violinist-vocalist Amanda Kapousouz (of tonight's headlining act Tin Cup Prophette) will likely sit in on several songs “WAR OF THE DEEJAYS" (Little Kings) Rounding out tonight's garage- rxk-heavy Little Kings bill is ‘War of the Deeiays,’ in which local music- obsessives Kurt Wxd. Jim Tucci and Devlin Thompson face off. Who wins? Those looking to shake a tailfeather. BRIAN WOLFF (40 Watt) Texas group Drums & Tuba used to be a duo. then added a guitar and expanded to a trio (but didn't adjust the name) The tuba part of the equation comes courtesy of Austin musician Brian Wolff, currently on a solo tour. No details available, though, as to how much of his perfor mance will consist of tuba, if any at all. ZOROASTER (Caledonia) Dark, juras- sic sludge-rxk trio from Atlanta. Self- titled EP out now, and word is a split release with Athens’ own Music Hates You is in the future.
