Fred Garbo’s Inflatable
Theater Company
UGA Fine Arts Theatre
Breathing new life (quite liter
ally, in the form of compressed air
inside of whimsical, colorful cre
ations of parachute silk) into old
vaudevillian idioms, Fred Garbo's
Inflatable Theater Company has
been likened to a live-action car
toon. With a resume that includes
Tony- and Obie-winning theatre
productions, collaborations with
Moses Pendleton's influential
MOMIX dance company (which
wowed Athenians at the Classic
Center last spring), and a stint as
the man inside "Sesame Street's
Barkley the Dog, Garbo is a sea
soned practitioner of the kind of
high-octane, ultra-imaginative
extravaganzas that were, in bygone eras, the heart and soul of popular comedy. His Inflatable
Theater Company made its debut to packed houses at Broadway's youth-centric New Victory
nearly a decade ago and has since mesmerized and tickled audiences across the globe.
As part of the performance, Garbo and his compatriot in comedy, Brazilian-born dancer
Daielma Santos, utilize their formidable skills in slapstick, mime, breathtaking juggling, and
acrobatics drawn largely from Garbo's childhood affection for the Marx Brothers and animated
Saturday morning fare. The, ahem, expansive buoyancy of the production, however, arises from
thr» myriad puffed novelties that slither, wriggle, wrinkle and swell, acting as a whole other
cast of fantastical characters around the two human performers.
During one portion of the act, Garbo dons his blown-up "Fred Zeplin" suit (think a more
pleasant spin on Violet Beauregard's affliction in the original Willy Wonka) to perform an in
fectious dance and lip-synch a rendition of "Do Ya Love Me?" What is perhaps most remarkable
about Garbo's delirious combination of winning, traditional comic turns and the madcap, in
genious fruits of a long-ago skydiving trip is that, while there's little doubt that children will
have an immediate connection with the production, the genial, seemingly effortless artistry
will make instant fans of adults as well. Fred Garbo's Inflatable Theater Company plays for one
day only at the Fine Arts Theatre on Saturday, Apr. 28 at 3 p.m. This events marks the first-
ever Saturday matinee there, so come see the show and maybe we'll get more family-friendly
shows on the weekends. Tickets are $18-523 (half-price for UGA students, discounts for
groups) and can be reserved by calling the box office at 706-542-4400. [Brandon Waddell]
