Decade: Trace & Rix.
DREAM GIRLS (Caledonia) In this
new trio, local guys Steven Grubbs,
Jordan Noel and Alex Nackashi play
bluesy yet upbeat no-frills garage rock.
8-TRACK GORILLA (Little Kings) The
schtick is usually this: local scenester
and music dude dresses up in a gorilla
costume and “sings' along to ‘70s-era
8-track tapes.
PETE ERCHICK (Flicker) Elephant

Cream, Hendrix, Vaughan.

“KARAOKE" (Walker's Pub) Every
Thursday. 10 pm
E.G. KIGHT (Melting Point) Georgia-
born guitarist-vocalist E G. Kight
performs folksy, commercial blues
infused with adult-contemporary
soulfulness and an easygoing storytell
ing. Her latest studio album is 2004's
Takin' It Easy, though there's a new live
album EG Live & Naked, recorded in
Pennsylvania two years ago, that was
just released.
LAZER/WULF (Repent) This local
art-metal five-piece mixes in prog and
more eclectic influences, and last year
released its demo album Demo-Lition.
LONA (40 Watt) Lona is the flagship
band for local songwriter, guitarist and
drummer Clay Leverett (The Chasers,
Now It's Overhead, Drip). The band
sends out more than a little country
and more than enough gutsy, mid-
tempo rock.
LONG-LEGGED WOMAN (Little
Kings) Vaguely drony and mostly
noisy, the duo of Gabe Vodicka and
Justin Flowers plays music that's
half-improvised, half-composed, and
any given performance is rarely like
the band's last one. The duo last year
put out the debut EP calied 1 and is
teatured on a new Athens noise-music
comp, and a new EP called Newtown
Nights—the band's fifth—should be
available. The group kicks off their na
tionwide “Gas Burrito Tour" with Better
People tonight.
MILLIGAN (Hilltop Grille) Performing
a set of cover songs, reworking both
classic rockers and more recent
numbers.
MORNING STATE (Tasty World) This
young melodic rock band used to split
its four members between Athens and
Atlanta, but they're all living in Atlanta
now. The debut EP is Retreat!!!, a disc
that's intricate and energetic, and lives
easily in both indie-rock and main
stream camps.
- MP3J VINAL (Mercury Lounge)
Richard Vmal (of local hip-hop/ funk
fusion act Bling the Children Back
Home) hosts the late-night eclectic
dance party thadl draw on classic
favorites as well as the new Internet
hotness
ON PARADISE BOULEVARD
(Repent) Fearsome melodic hardcore
foursome (after a recent line-up reduc
tion) from Atlanta that packs multiple
throat-shredding vocals atop a throb
bing. metallic bed of guitar histrionics.
PAPER TANKS (Little Kings) Local
band creating spacious, atmospheric
and moody soundscapes punctuated
by acoustic guitar and open vocals.
THE PLAGUE (Caledonia) In the
1980s, this punk band formed as
one of the first of its kind in Athens.
Members went on to play in bands like
Sump and “““Volcanic, but in 2005
revitalized The Plague, their early,
rough and energetic creation.
KENNY POWERS (Wild Wing Caf6)
Athens-born and Athens-raised,
singer-songwriter Kenny Powers (of
the band Nothing Fancy) pulls out the
acoustic jams with a precise style of
guitar playing and James Taylor-ish
voca's
RASTA BLANCA (Caledonia) Reggae
covers and originals.
THE REIN (Repent) Evolve. Sleep, is
the new EP from Atlanta gang The Rein,
slipping some Joey Santiago-styled
guitar into the more expected hardcore
thump’n'seream.
THE SNAKE, THE CROSS, THE
CROWN (Tasty World) Folk-tinged,
sing-along pop with layered keyboard
backdrops and a strong melodic line is
easy to do and hard to do well. Coming
off a four-year stint in Santa Barbara
with a fine new album, Cotton Teeth, in
tow, The Snake, The Cross. The Crown
does just that.
TIMES UP! (Repent) Some ex-mem
bers of Anothe' Broken Vehicle blast
off with this new local hardcore band,
apparently dipping into old-school
influences like Integrity and Warzone.
The band features Blake Skipper. Roger
Strom, Patrick Tray and Brian Switzer.
TWO GALLANTS (Tasty World) San
Francisco duo Two Gallants—Adam
Stephens and Tyson Vogel—play a
fractured sort of folk-influenced indie-
rock drawing on rustic delta blues. The
guys hooked up with Saddle Creek
Records in 2005, and last year released
What the Toll Tells, the new follow-up
is called The Scenery of Farewell. See
Box
WHO’S BAD? (Georgia Theatre) It’s
a Michael Jackson tribute act: cos
tumes, etcetera, in an effort to recreate
and personify. Featuring new singer
E'Casanova
Friday. June 15
A.ARMADA (40 Watt) Athens’ Aaron
Stephenson, Matt Nelson, Josh
McCauley and new drummer Jeremy
Harbin play energetic, epic indie rock,
and a listen to some tracks reveals the
influence or bands like Death Cab for
Cutie and Modest Mouse. The bands
self-titled EP takes things in a more
cinematic post-rock direction, though,
with touches of Godspeed and such.
"ATHENS 441 ” (Morton Theatre) It's
another show curated by WUGA 91.7
FM's JoE Silva, taped and set to broad
cast across the Southeast. Tonight's
edition features the swirly and airy,
flute-accented smooth jazz/indie-pop
hybrid of M Coast as well as two other
yet-to-be-announced acts.
MEGAN BAER (Little Kings) Local
songwriter Megan Baer performs to
point a little attention at her new CD
Out of Place, a bittersweet and dusky
collection of country-folk tunes.
BEARFOOT HOOKERS (Melting
Point) The rowdy band performs funky,
good-humored country on the enter
taining sophomore album Life at the
Bar, and is the power behind last yearns
Welcome to Athens: A Drinkin' Town
