ARTISTS OF ATHFESf
Chenille Peacocks: Peter and Sandy Loose's collection
of chenille objects is currently on display at the LHAC
in the upstairs gallery. Upon climbing the stairs, it be
comes instantly obvious that the exhibit is not like any
other. A couch awaits with a sign that reads, “Please
sit, relax and touch." The view from the couch is won
derful. Chenille dolls in a display case all have eyes
looking in the same direction. And beyond the dolls,
every wall has been covered in blankets with bright col
ors and fun patterns and designs. Rockets and sailboats,
flowers and birds, baseball and football, and peacocks
(lots of peacocks), are among the images depicted.
There are also geometric designs, much like those found
in quilts. The exhibit is fun, festive and sure to delight.
Please remember not to touch the wall-hangings, only
the couch. The show runs through Aug. 4. The LHAC is
located at 293 Hoyt St. downtown, 706-613-3623.
June in Athens means two things: it's hot and it's time for AthFest,
the annual music and arts extravaganza. This year's Arts portion
of AthFest is sorely missing Donald Keyes, the Arts Director for
AthFest who died May 19 after suffering a heart attack. Despite
the void left by his death, the committee has been working hard
to ensure that the event is a success. Accompanying the Artisan
Market this year are exhibitions at the Lyndon House Arts Center
and ATHICA.
Artisan Market: This year's Artisan Market will feature work from
49 artists from Georgia and seven other states. The Georgia-based
artists include Jamie Calkin (prints of Athens), Cathy Dailey
(paintings of pets). Will Eskridge (portraits), Tim Flynn and
Bobbi Jo Imbrogno of Flat Penny Folk Art Gallery (ceramics),
Jillian Guarco (abstract photography) and others. The market will
be held near the Hull Street Stage Area on West Washington Street,
Friday, June 22, 5-10 p.m., Saturday, June 23, 12-10 p.m., and
Sunday, June 24, 12-8 p.m. Look for a complete list of the artists
in the AthFest Program inserted in this issue. Don't miss the Art
Cars and the new sculpture garden. See www.athfest.com.
Rock Style: Brice Bischoff, Kevin Parks Hauser and Jamie
Spinello, recent graduates of the San Francisco Art Institute
Master of Fine Arts program, are touring the country, present
"Young and Hungry" by Katherine McGuire
ing one-night-only shows. They will be appearing at ATHICA on
Thursday, June 21, 5:30-7 p.m. Bischoff will be displaying large-
scale photographic installations; Hauser works in “New Genres:"
and Spinello creates constructions from cut paper and plastic.
Kevin Parks Hauser will be performing a set of “hopelessly sad
songs" at 6:30 p.m. A CD catalogue of the exhibit will be available
for sale on the evening of the performance. ATHICA is located in
Unit 4 of the Chase Street Warehouses, off Barber Street, 706-208-
1613. For more info, see the AthFest Program in this issue, www.
athica.org or www.selfmadeartists.com.
The Earth Will Swallow You: Null's Space and the Lyndon House
Art Center (LHAC) present a music-oriented art exhibit as part of
AthFest. This year's exhibit, titled "The Earth Will Swallow You,"
features art created by and inspired by the band Widespread
Panic, including posters, album art and paintings of the band.
Among the posters included in the show are hand-pulled screen-
prints, glow-in-the-dark posters, and work by local artists such as
Chris Bilheimer and Stephanie Dotson. There is even an explana
tion from bandmember John Bell about the history of the image
of the “note eater," which is frequently seen in Widespread Panic
paraphernalia. The exhibit also includes a poster advertising the
shows at Red Rocks on June 22-24. Other items include a sword,
a painted refrigerator box, and a suitcase of letters made by John
Crowe which appeared on the cover of the 1999 "Dyin' Man"
single. See Barbette Houser's fabric piece, "The Earth Will Swallow
You," which inspired a song by her husband and bandmember, the
late Michael Houser. The 2002 documentary by Christopher and
Geoffrey Hanson by that same title will be playing during the
exhibition. Also playing during the exhibition will be Panic in the
Streets, recorded during the 1999 album release party in downtown
Athens. The show will be up until Aug. 25. See www.accleisureser-
vices/lyndon.shtml.
Mexican Artists in Georgia: Curated by art historian Evan
Firestone, an art professor at UGA, and funded with a grant from
the Institute of Museum and Library Services, "Mexican Artists in
Georgia," on display at the Lyndon House Arts Center (LHAC),
presents work by four artists born in Mexico and working in
Georgia. Jorge Arcos, born in Mexico City and living in Decatur, is
displaying several textural paintings. "Consciousness" is a mixed-
media painting on panel. Thick textures and bold colors create
shapes from torn fabrics and black lines. "Deliberate Creation"
utilizes sand to establish an earthy, marbled look. Hijo de la
Luna was born in North Mexico, and now lives in Atlanta. Among
his many photographs on display is "Guerrero Coca Cola," which
juxtaposes the red circle of the Coca-Cola emblem with the same
color and shape headdress worn by a dancer at a festival. Claudia
Padilla, born in Mexico City and living in Norcross, is displaying
mixed-media sculptural pieces and paintings. "Who Will Sing to
You" is a large guitar fashioned from aluminum. "Sun of the City"
uses cut-up tires as the sun's rays. Padilla paints wonderfully ab
stracted expressionistic figures, like "Strawberry Girl." She also
combines aluminum and canvas to create works which are part
painting and part sculpture. Angel Ros also has a varied approach
to art-making. He is displaying figure paintings, a self-
portrait and three abstracted paintings titled "Blue,"
"Red" and "Green." The exhibit will be on display
through Aug. 11.
< Prints at Broad Street Gallery: "Young and Hungry,"
a group show of contemporary printmakers, is on
view at the Broad Street Gallery until June 27. Talia
Bromstad's “Goosed" is a relief print with gold-colored
ink, which brings to mind the story of the goose that
lays the golden egg. Megan Bolin's "An Adage Coy"
is an intaglio print with a face of a young girl and a
domino repeated under a loosely drawn grid. Katherine McGuire,
who organized the print exchange and show, created a screen-
print titled “Young and Hungry," depicting a silhouette in a tiled
courtyard. Christopher Durocher's “Lurid Independence" is a
screenprint resembling a movie screen. James Greene's screenprint
depicts a deer in a forest, a psychedelic Bambi manipulated in Pop
Art fashion. Brent Collins' relief print is one of the more inter
esting prints in technique and subject matter; a simple wooden
structure in an open landscape with mountains in the distance
feels elegant and meaningful. "Into the Woods," by Samantha
Mosby, is a black and white intaglio of bunnies huddled together,
viewed from above, the lines are soft and fuzzy like a rabbit's fur.
Jennifer Bennett's "Analogy" is a screen-print of words in a pat
tern creating a "text quilt" with a transparent red bird taking flight
in the upper right corner. Matthew Di Clemente's "Cooking with
Big W" is a recipe for G.W.'s U308 Free Yellow Cake Recipe, redefin
ing the controversial nuclear ingredient in a "sweet" way. Danielle
Benson's litho is like a child's drawing with a bike, teepee and a
circle for a sun, all in primary colors. David Broughton's intaglio is
a portrait showing only the eyes and hair of the subject in profile.
Elizabeth Stoutamire's "Save the Whales" has an air of the sacred,
with a border drawn around a beautifully rendered floating whale.
Erin Hoffman's "Candy* is a relief print of a yummy assortment of
sugary sweets: a lollipop, chocolates and candy corn. "Young and
Hungry" closes on June 27. The gallery is located downtown at 257
W. Broad St, and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. -5 p.m.
