around his environment and noticing wherever
there's a need.' For example, when he first saw
prisoners picking up trash by the side of the
road, he became very conscientious about pick
ing up trash wherever he saw it, she says. Kelli,
a doctoral student in education, says she feels
their neighborhood has encouraged Mason's
community spirit, along with good teachers at
Waseca and at Barrow Elementary.
Once Mason and Kelli decided on the idea
of collecting donations via the lemonade stand,
the first thing they did was make a flyer. Mason
distributed it around his Boulevard area neigh
borhood, going door to door with his mom and
explaining his project. The next step was sending
the flyer to the neighborhood listserv, and from
there to a listserv at UGA. A few donations ar
rived early, much to Mason's delight.
With help from a couple of friends of friends
who are stationed in Iraq, Mason and his mom
have compiled a list of things the soldiers are re
questing, including items like snacks, sunglasses,
feminine products, reading material, socks, nail
clippers, Blistex, and AT&T phone cards. For a

Long Recovery
Update on Injured Cyclist
Several weeks after 22-year-old UGA student
Sam Lane suffered brain injuries in a bicycle-car
accident on Prince Avenue, Flagpole checked in
with his family for an update on Lane's condition.
Lane was injured on the evening of Friday.
Apr. 27, when a westbound car turned in front
of him to make a left turn onto Hill Street from
Prince Avenue. Lane, traveling east on Prince,
was on his way to a Critical Mass group bike ride
at the time of the accident, which was witnessed
by cyclists on a different group ride, called
Courteous Mass (sponsored by local non-profit
BikeAthens) and by riders who were in Athens
for the Twilight Criterium. Lane was not wearing
a helmet. Police charged the driver of the car in
the accident, Seybom Gordon, with OUI, failure
to yield right-of-way, serious injury by a vehicle,
and no proof of insurance.
According to Lane's cousin. Lane Douglass of
Augusta, Sam Lane was moved in mid-May from
Athens Regional Medical Center to a hospital in
Jackson, MS, where his immediate family lives.
Douglass reports that on May 29, after approxi
mately another 10 days in intensive care. Lane
made the significant move to a rehabilitation
hospital. There, she says, he is conscious and
is undergoing daily physical, occupational and
speech therapy. The therapy, for now, includes
sitting and standing for longer periods of time
each day, and Lane is making improvements daily.
Douglass reports that Lane has no paraly
sis, but that he is limited in physical mobility
because of muscle weakness. The right side of
his body is weaker than the left side because
of the location of one of his brain injuries, she
explains. Since regaining consciousness, however.
Lane is able to recognize and talk to his family,
as well as the nurses and therapists working with
him. Douglass says Lane spends most of his time
in a wheelchair and is typically tired out by his
daily regimen of exercises. He is still unable to
sit up or stand completely under his own power,
but "he is getting stronger every day,' she says.
And his swift recovery of cognitive functions has
surprised his doctors. Also on the positive side,
she says, he 'has been briefly reunited with his
dog, whom he is absolutely ciazy about.
'Despite all of the positive signs we are see
ing," Douglass says, 'the doctors have stressed
to us that it is going to be a very tong recovery
period, so we ask for everyone in Athens to
continue thinking about and praying for Sam.'
Douglass adds that the family is grateful for
the Lane's friends and "amazing support group"
in Athens. Cards can be sent to Sam Lane at: 2
Rivers Creek, Jackson, MS 39211.
