Tasty World
It is commonly thought
that the sharpest wits and
most lively personalities
make the best comedians.
Neil Hamburger's nerdy,
deadpan musings are hilar
ious vrithout the unneces
sary fluff. The humor may
be dry, but we are in the
midst of a historic drought
anyway, right?
Those unfamiliar with
the tuxedo-wearing co
median with the greasy
hair, awkward pauses and
perpetual cocktail in hand
should know that, despite
Hamburger's lethargic and
uncomfortable stage pres
ence, the audience is most
definitely laughing with him, not at him. He's released five albums on Drag City Records as
an equal-opportunity offender. He's just as likely to take jabs at abortionists as McDonald's.
Check out Mr. Hamburger on MySpace, where he boasts an impressive 5,000+ friends at www.
myspace.com/americasfunnyman. That number might pale in comparison to David Spade, Andy
Dick and Carlos Mencia, who have a combined number near half a million. Hamburger isn't im
pressed. "Those people are not very discerning about who they accept as friends," he quips.
Despite making multiple appearances on FOX News, Hamburger is decidedly apolitical. "My
politics are that I would like to be on TV more often," he says. Having also made 88 recent
appearances qn the Tom Green web show, hosted by MTV's former golden boy. Hamburger
might be positioning himself as the hardest working man in show business, if not the most t
sweaty. "I have been on tour for the past four years with only three days off," he says, which
certainly explains the perspiration and abundance of material
Commenting on R.E.M.'s recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hamburger
doesn't see much hope for comedians ever being inducted, even Andy Kaufman. "I don't be
lieve the Rock and RoU Hall of Fame pays its inductees; thus it is worthless." he laments. And
although his World's Funnyman DVD is selling welt and a CD of exrarpts from his shows open
ing for Tenacious D gives him street cred with a certain demographic, Neil admits that what
most concertgoers want is t-shirts. "That's all anyone wants. Much more than jokes, or even
love... shirts! I should be working on more shirt designs rather than more jokes."
^ Mr. Hamburger will be at Tasty World this week with Dr. El Suavo and Athens'own Pete
McBrayer. The show starts at 10 p.m., and admission is only $7. [Stephen Cramer]
