1408 (PG-13) 1408. like many mov
ies adapted from Stephen King short
stories, this film would be better off
minus about 30 minutes The latrly
old-fashioned ghost story, starring
John Cusack as a non-believing, occult
writer who gets his in a truly evil hotel
room, ranks in the top third of King ad
aptations After a maliciously forebod
ing first act (greatly assisted by Sam
Jackson’s deeply intoned recounting of
the room's deadly history). 1408 does
not really generate much in the way
of scares, despite an above-average
performance from Cusack. He milks
some real emotion from his character's
paranormal ly-assisted psychological
freakout over walking out on his wife
after their young daughter's death - a
plot point added by the screenwriters
