A IS PLAYING AT B ON C
Friday, June 29
Man Man,
Psychic Hearts
40 Watt Club
It's unlikely that
even the members of
Man Man could de
scribe themselves. The
PhiUy five-piece crafts
music that's just as
close to the literal
definition of pop (as
in ‘'burst"') as it is to
the genre. Anyone
who's heard the break
through album, last year's Six Demon Bag, is already hip to the band's call-and-response vocals,
waltz rhythms and Zappa-esque serise of theatre and quirky hairpin turns. Lead singer Honus
Honus possesses a dirt-road voice, veering between Tom Waits and a James Hetfield growL In
fact, much of the band's music sounds like a Beefheart/ Waits acid trip around Central America,
gathering the moss of Latin flavors and cantinas filled with boisterous tequila-fueled vaqueros
breaking into song after sucking on a helium tank. Random sound effects such as firecrackers,
explosions and slamming objects provide percussion as much as the drum kit.
One never knows how to accurately classify any one Man Man song. But for all the soaring
silliness, the group can get pretty on a dime, jarring the listener into an ever-so-brief moment
of feeling, all the more effective because of its fleetingness. It's a giant circus, but to stop
there is to do Man Man a serious disservice. Beneath the seemingly nitrous oxide-induced gid
diness exists some truly talented songwriting and damned good lyrics, like caviar waiting in
the bottom of a yogurt cup.
All the sly drug references herein also belie the deep strength of Man Man. The idea,
though, is that to have this much fun while secretly nursing a broken heart is more unique
than simply making crazy music. Onstage, the band embodies the cliche "must be seen to be
believed.* There's just no way to capture the experience on record. A huge plus is the chance
to catch tracks from the forthcoming third album (rumored for an early '08 release) on tour.
A great number of artists today are weird for weird's sake. Man Man never tastes that way.
