MIKf WHITE deadlydevgns com MUSIC NEWS Okay people, you may be worn out and roc iced out from At h Fest last week, but the summer is far from over. To wit. look at all this hoo-ha happening down below. Yes, go took now... Home Grown: A bunch of local environmentally minded music fans are inviting Athens over on Friday, June 29. What's being billed as a "global warming acoustic concert and house party' will feature guest speakers and live musical performances 'in a family- friendly, neighborly environment" by Zachary Gresham (of Summer Hymns), Brock Butler (of Perpetual Groove). Ham 1 and Hope For Agoldensummer songwriter Claire Campbell & Friends. Everything gets going at 7:45 p.m., with some food and drink provided. “All proceeds will benefit various global warming initiatives. Our goal is to purchase DVD copies of An Inconvenient Truth for every public library in Georgia," says the group. For more information or directions, visit www.myspace.com/actionclimate or email ac- tion_climate@hotmail.com. Watch for Falling Songs: Local band Timber will release its new album For Never & Always on local label Furiined Records and you can get it directly from the band, presumably in local stores soon and via iTunes or MySpace. At its best, the band sounds incredibly reminiscent of former Athens act Vigilantes of Love or, rather, that band's frontman Bill Mallonee. Catch Timber live over at nicker on Thursday, June 28 and grab the new album over at www.myspace. com/timbermusic; the official CD release show is happening at Little Kings on Friday, July 13. Well Finally: Several weeks back, you read here about former Journey frontman Steve Perry producing and singing with Athens band Guff. Well, the track recorded was an unreleased Journey song called "I Can See It In Your Eyes' (good God, what a typically schmaltzy Journey title!) and Perry sings back-up on it. The track is included in Guffs newest album for Go Kart Records Symphony of Voices, out this week. In a very cool move, the band will play two release shows on Friday. June 29. The first one happens at 5 p.m. over at Nug's Space and is all-ages. The second one happens the same night at Tasty World and is, of course, 18 and up. Guff will be joined by The Honor Roll, American Mutts, Karbomb and Thunderchief at Nug's Space and everyone except Thunderchief at Tasty World. Guff will also play 14 dates on this summer's Warped Tour. Go check 'em out over at www.myspace.com/guff or www. guffmusic.com. AND GOSSIP Come Again: Archivists and enthusiast should be excited that Atlanta label Stickfigure has just re-released the long out-of-pnnt five-song EP from former Atlanta rock band At the Price of the Union The group was a solid staple of the late-1990s Atlanta house show scene and nearly always impressive. Easily as hard-hit ting and emotionally relevant as any other band of that era. At the j Price of the Union broke up with only the The Mechanics of Wind to preserve what the ensemble created. Member Craig Dempsey went on*to play with The 42. Good Friday Experiment and Thoroughbred along with member Luke Gilbert Josh Lott went on to join Paper Lions and Teenage Meth Lab and is now the drummer for Elf Power. For more info, please see www.stickfiguredistro.com. A Pirate’s Life For Me: Ryan Cox. AKA Sailor Winters has made available the movie that has been accompanying his performances of the Sailor Winters album Red At Morn. Running more than an hour, the film is a series of stunning visual effects that match the music exactly and leave you exhausted. I know. I've seen it. Cox is selling copies for a mere S5 and if you're honestly really interested and honestly really poor, he may throw one your way for free. Go get one via www.myspace.com/sailowvinters or www.sailorwinters. com. That's A Decade To Me And You: Radio promotion company Team Clermont will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year with its annual Summer Festival & Blue Ribbon Ball With events running from Wednesday, July 25 to Saturday, July 28, the organizers have spread the tal ent out in a good way so all Athenians should be able to catch something they want to see. Featured perform ers include Bobby Conn who will perform at The Blue Ribbon Ball, Starlight Mints Ladybug Transistor Tin Cup Prophette Summer Hymns Deerhunter Bottom Of The Hudson Ham 1, King Of Prussia Castanets and Phosphorescent (which will play together in a single performance), Arizona A Northern Chorus Benjy Feree ex-Poi Dog Pondering member Abra Moore deejay Twin Powers and K Records founder Calvin Johnson For those concerned that Johnson is breaking his rule of only play ing non-sponsored, all-ages shows, relax. Hes ptaying at the annual kickball tournament known as "Ws vs. Ks" (in reference to the first tetter of each competing radio station's catl letters). Ticket prices are not yet announced, j but you can get venue information and a detailed sched ule over at www.teamclermont.com. < The Devil Went Down To Georgia: Summer is the time of festivals and coming hot on the heels of its polar op posite—the Athens PopFest—is the newly christened Devil Neck Metal Fest. Organized by Joel Martin (Subrig Destroyer, ex-Ballpeen), the festival will run from Aug. 23 to Aug. 25 over at Repent and will include approxi mately 35 bands. Martin says, 'There's this big metal fest every year in Youngstown, OH, and it gets lots of attention. I figured that a town like Athens could hold such a festival if a small town in Ohio could. I get tired of all the cool metal bands going to Atlanta and bypass ing Athers. I'm trying to draw bands' attention to us and maybe bring some Atlanta people to shows here instead of us having to go to there to see a great show. On the whole, the response has been great." The lineup is not yet nailed down, but announced acts include Zoroaster, Music Hates You, The Dumps. Pride Parade. Rat Babies. Polemic and Comanche, among others. Put your fist in the air over at www.myspace.com/devilneckmetalfest. Well, Damn: The one band in the Athens hardcore/ metal scene that was organized enough to make a solid go of it—should the angels of good fortune have smiled upon it—has broken up. Aegis of Athena played its final show last week at Repent due to incred ibly normal circumstances of people getting jobs out of town and having other projects going on. Although the band never really got any solid touring under its belt, it was fortunate enough to have hotshot—and I mean that in a sweet way—producer Jamie King (Between The Buried And Me, He Is Legend) mix and master the group's self-titled debut album last fall. For now, the band lives on over at www.myspace.com/aegisofathena, so go give a listen. As always, be sure to keep your news coming in and always mention either Threats 8.
