SAM LANE
I thought your readers would like another
update on the amazing progress of Sam Lane, the
bicyclist who was hit by a drunk driver and criti
cally injured back in April on the weekend of the
Twilight Criterium. Sam spent several weeks here
at Athens Regional
Hospital, in a medical
ly induced coma, dur
ing which time several
local restaurants—and
most notably Ted at
the Grit—were ex
tremely generous and
supportive of the fam
ily by offering them
complimentary meal
tickets. Thanks also to
the Bluebird and Marti's at Midday for their gen
erosity. The patrons of the Daily Groceries food
co-op, where Sam worked as a volunteer, were
also extremely generous.
Sa"-. was transported back home, to Jackson,
MS and is now undergoing rehab at a world-re
nowned facility. His physician has never seen a
patient progress with such speed and consistency
as is Sam. According to his sister, Mary Mills
Ritchie, Sam has regained his speech and cogni
tive functions, he can read, and he is making
steady progress. In speaking with Mary Mills, I
mentioned the number of young people I still
see, frequently riding their bikes without hel
mets. Sam's father had hoped that this incident
would inspire more cyclists to wear their helmets.
Anyone who would like to contact Sam or
his family directly may do so at marymills.
ritchie@gmail.com. On behalf of the Lane family,
I'd like to thank everyone in Athens who's lent
their support and generosity to his recovery.

SPROCKETS PROPS
Chris Hassiotis' summary of the origins of the
Sprocxets Music + Video show as a "venue for
scrappy and often amateurish" local films left
me glowing with pride [Out There!, June 20]. I
was one of the small handful of filmmakers that
organizers Film::Athens reached out to in 2004
seeking contributions for their proposed Athens
Film Festival After seven years spent wondering
where I fit into this town's rich and flourishing
culture, it was a great moment in my life to sit
crammed into a couch at the 40 Watt with my
friends as we enjoyed a midnight screening of
our homemade cult epic "PsychoVixens" (some
of you may remember parts of it as you rin for
the exits). The following year, Film::Athens twice
invited us to take part in local film events at
Ricker where our scrappy, amateurish efforts
played alongside those of other locals like us.
It was an incredible feeling to be acknowledged
and embraced by the Athens arts scene in this
way and HI never forget it. It was encouraging,
inspiring and a hell of a lot of fun, but most
importantly it made me push myself to continue
to do what I love and
improve with each
movie made. I'm happy
that Film::Athens has
hit on something with
the music video show
and with TeenScreen
(something that
would've helped me
avoid lots of trouble
as a kid) creating op
portunities that didn't
exist when I moved here a decade ago. Athens
seems to finally be well on its way to having a
real film scene, and I'm proud to have played a
small part in its scrappy, amateurish beginnings.

ROBOTS FOR BRAINS
To the esteemed citizens of Athens I would
like to offer my views in response to the most
brilliant article concerning the utilization of
robotics in capitalistic society [Letter “One
Hundred Robots," June 6]. Not long ago, I was
accosted on the streets of this city by a band of
ruffians. The experience left me a little shaken
up, to say the least! When one considers the
amount of crime encountered on a leisurely stroll
alone, said person is left staggered and outraged.
The solution to these savage and criminal acts
is the implementation of what I consider the
only plausible one: mainly, robotic control of the
human brain. Never again will we live in fear to
leave our hearth and home for a stroll down the
streets of our city and never again will the crimi
nal elements which roam these streets threaten
the peace and quiet that exist within the human
heart and, more precisely, brain.

FLYER ETIQUETTE
ft
Having played in several local bands since
1993, 1 am accustomed to the unwritten rules
of "flyer etiqueice." What I mean is that when
putting your Tyers up, for whatever event you
wish to promote, the proper method is to look
for flyers advertising events that have already
taken place. At this point you can post over
them or remove them to make space for your
flyer. Seems like common sense. Well, appar
ently not, since twice recently I have had flyers
blatantly posted over. The first occurrence was
less than 12 hours after I had put them up. On
one kiosk, the flyer had been completely posted
over with one advertising Detour for the same
night. On the other kiosk, they had posted over
three-fourths of the flyer. Needless to say, I just
threw them in the garbage. Two days later, I'm
downtown and Athens Creative Theater has done
the same thing. Both kiosks. The irritating thing
about it is that on further inspection, there were
several flyers on both kiosks advertising events
that had already taken place. Meaning: fair game.
So I have to conclude whoever put their flyers up
either was careless, thoughtless, or both.
While this is not a huge deal in the big
scheme of things, I just wanted to mention to
everyone that when advertising an event, think
in terms of how you would want your work to be
treated and post your flyers accordingly. There
honestly is plenty of room; it only takes seconds
to find flyers for events that already took place.
