OCEAN’S THIRTEEN (PG-13)
Ocean's Thirteen rebottles the etfer-
vescent. effortless charms of 2001s
Oceans Eleven. Revenge is the name of
the game as Danny (George Clooney)
and the boys plot to pay back casino
owner Willie Bank (Al Pacino) for
hurting one of their own. (Georgia
Square 5)
RATATOUILLE (G)Remythe ral
(Patton Oswalt) dreams of being a
top chef Garbage boy Ltnguine (Lou
Romano) doesn't want to lose another
job Together they become the gastro
nomic sensation of Paris. Ratatouillc
again proves Pixar is king Directed
by Brad Bird (The Incredibles).

SHREK THE THIRD (PG) After the
death of King Harold. Shrek (voiced by
Mike Myers) ana friends strike out in
search of a new king Meanwhile. Fiona
(Cameron Diaz) must deal with Prince
Charming Shrek the Third is the
weakest of the franchises three films
(Georgia Square 5)
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (PG-13) My
fandom firmly established during the
show's initial cult phase (a status long
since revoked). I can't help but greet
the unwanted, long-gestating feature
version of this cultural institution
with a single. D oh!" As “South Park'
presciently declared. "Simpsons did
it' They've done it so much that most
every surreal plot turn and nonsensi
cal gag—-most meriting a chuckle but
none worth busting a gut over—are
recycled Additionally, the maior irr-tant
plaguing the last few seasons of “The
Simpsons' recurs in The Simpsons
Movie The once misguided but genu
ine Homer has become an unforgivably
self-seeking egotist constantly being
punished for his misdeeds. As Homer
has devolved, so has creator Matl
Groening's brilliant program, more
prone to take the easy joke out its
patriarch as opposed to fostering the
family's development At 85 minutes.
The Simpsons Movie is forced to slight
many of Springfield's favored denizens
out of plot-fueled necessity, I'd rather
spend more time with Krusty, Apu,
Moe. Ralph, or [insert your favorite
resident) than on Homer's trek through
the Alaskan wilds. Neither as smart nor
as witty as the once great “Simpsons'
ol the mid-1990s, the meekly amus
ing, three-episodes-strung-together
Simpsons Movie cannot justify the
ticket price. (Beechwood Carmike)

SUPERBAD (R) If you haven't seen
the trailer for Superbad, I task you to
find it online as soon as possible Best
friends Evan (Michael Cera ot "Arrested
Development ') and Seth (Jonah Hill,
whose big summer has already in
cluded Knocked Up and Evan Almighty)
experience separate anxiety as they pre
pare to graduate. Directed by "Arrested
Development' and “Undeclared ' vet
Greg Mottola. cowritten by costar Seth
Rogen. who should still be riding the
blockbuster wave of Knocked Up.
and produced by Knocked Up writer-
director Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old
Virgin). Superbad should be super
funny. Opens Friday (Call Theaters)
SURF’S UP (PG) A mockumentary
of up-and-coming surfer and pen
guin Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia
LeBeouf), the mildly amusing, never
hysterical Surf's Up has a hard time
finding its wave, but once it does, set
tles into a nice comedic rhythm, thanks
to some muiti-generational gags and a
sensationally deep vocal characteriza
tion by Jeff Bridges After escaping his
Antarctic hometown. Cody bombs his
first run and winds up in the jungle
with old surf bum Geek (v. Bridges).
The lessons are all pat and the docu
mentary PO.V dropped whenever it be
comes dramatically inconvenient Still,
soothingly beautiful ocean animation
and terrifically amusing performances
make Surf's Up a nice little wave to
catch (Georgia Square 5)
TRANSFORMERS (PG-13) The
good-guy Autofcots befriend young
Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who
aids them in their quest to stop the
evil Decepticons from eradicating
mankind That's pretty much the
story and Michael Bay's everything-
must-blow-up feature is sticking to
it. Screenwriters Roberto Orci and
Alex Kurtzman nimbly blend unwieldy
cartoon mythology into a larger action
picture of incredible accessibility to
novices Transformers is the best adap
tation of a cartoon ever. (Beechwood)
UNDERDOG (PG) Underdog at
tempts to make the concept of the silly
60s cartoon so acceptably realistic
and scientifically believable that it
becomes boring and trite. Why can't
Underdog/ Shoeshine (voiced by
Jason Lee ot “My Name is Earl') just
be a talking, flying super dog 7 Must
we explain everything away with DNA
recombination 7 Computer-generating
the heroic, rhyming pooch and gal pal
Polly Purebreed would have helped
immensely. Still, the film's adult
players have less luck looking like
their cartoon counterparts (besides
the always perfect Patrick Warburton
as Cad); Peter Dinklage (The Station
Agent) bears no resemblance to Dr.
Simon Barsinister Lee. parlaying his
“My Name Is Earl" success into bland
family film stardom, sounds nothing
like the Underdog I remember Your
typical charmless, dumbed-down fam
ily fare. Underdog will only please the
wee ones (Beechwood. Carmike)
