“ATHENS 441 WEEK: DAY TWO”
(Morion Theatre) It’s another show
curated by WU6A 91.7 FM’s JoE Silva,
taped and set to broadcast across
the Southeast. The Morton is hosting
a show every night this week, and
tonight's is the second, featuring local
songwriter Wilma, the pop classicists
of Nutria and lovably ramshackle
family folk-punk band Nana Grizol.

JOKER (Caledonia) Locals Jason
Norris (vocals), Daniel Binnie (guitar),
Mark Crowley (bass) and Ted Lord
(drums) blend modern and classic
hard rock.
JUMPIN'JESUS CHRISTERS
(Caledonia) This local band plays
old-time, bluegrass and country with
upright bass, banjo, mandolin, fiddles
and guitar Just back in town from a
brief tour.

Napoleon Solo's the multitasking one-
man-band who handles it all.
NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE
SAGE (Georgia Theatre) Birthed from
the same hazy California atmosphere
as the Grateful Dead, the New Riders
of the Purple Sage have always resided
in that band's formidable shadow. The
good-time country rockers have gone
through numerous lineup changes
since those days, and original vocal
ist John Dawson left the band due to
health concerns, but the remaining
gang can still toss off a few sparks of
weepy blue country and contagious
desert rock.
THE PLAGUE (Caledonia) In the
1980s, this punk band formed as
one of the first of its kind in Athens.
Members went on to play in bands like
Sump and "’"Volcanic, but in 2005,
they revitalized The Plague, their early,
rough and energetic creation.
PRIME TIME JAZZ (Porterhouse)
Drummer Tony McCutchen, bass
ist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim
McKillip perform jazz.standards for
the dinner-and-a-drink set every
Wednesday.
BRIAN SMITH (Casa Mia) Georgia
Guitar Quartet member Brian Smith
plays classical guitar every Wednesday
night at the downtown tapas restaurant.

of catchy, upbeat '60s pop. Inspired by

TRUNKFIRE (Arbor Salon & Spa)
Featuring local musician Paul Lombard
(formerly of Billy James, The Vultures
and Dashboard Saviors). Trunkfire
performs infrequently but powerfully,
featuring a blend of traditional folk,

(Melting Point) Every week, local
singer-songwriter Jay Markwalter

aims to focus on artists proficient in
the craft of songwriting. Tonight, the
spotlight shines on Winfield Smith. .

“BEAT THE DRUM” (Melting Point)
A percussion-oriented event benefiting
the “Drumming For Success" youth
program. UGA professor and revered
hand-percussionist Dr. Arvin Scott
founded the successful program seven
years ago; ‘Beat The Drum’ allows
participants to take part in a “spon
taneous" drum orchestra conducted
onstage. Musicians and non-musicians
are urged to attend and participate.
Look for Scott’s album Drum Voices
(Arch), a worldly collection of sounds
that includes a live “Drumming For
Success’ session. Widespread Panic
percussionist Sunny Ortiz sits in as
well. 8 p.m.
“BIG THANGS POPPIN’ PARTY"
(Georgia Theatre) Local company
Diamond Global, a multi-media effort
specializing in web design, event pro
motion and cheesecake photography,
is putting together this back-to-school
dance party. As the party's name is
cribbed from a T.l. song, expect a lot of
current hip-hop from tonight’s turntab-

CACHAQA (Farm 255) Playing
Brazilian-styled music, this new band
features Jake Mowrer (nylon-stringed
guitar) and Jim Coley (upright bass) of
Hot Club of Athens and Kane Stanley
and Ryan Wendel of Grogus, among
other groups, on percussion.
CARRABELLE (Tasty World) Local
“post-hardcore/ screamo/ experimen
tal’ band.
CONNER (Alibi) Country covers and
originals, on the deck.
DICTATORTOTS (Tasty World)
Seemingly outrageously crude, the
L.ig-running Athenian chaos cultiva
tors stomp about and trash the night
with their beery post-grunge sounds.
The band recently turned out an EP
called DMmIM.
OJ REBB (Detour) Atlanta's DJ Rebb
plays Top 40, hip-hop, progressive
house and other electronic sounds
prime for dancing Every Thursday
DJ RIX (Loft) Championing dance
favorites every Thursday, Atlanta's
DJ Rix favors breakbeat and hip-hop
mixes. He recently collaborated with
Louisiana's Trace on a new mix called
TR-IXX.
WILL HOGE (40 Watt) The talented
Nashville country guitarist-vocalist-
harmonica player took a turn for the
political on the recent concise but
effective five-song EP America. Now
he's back with a full band—Dean
Tomasek (bass), Jefferson Crow (keys),
Sigurdur Birkis (drums), Adam Fluhrer
(guitar)—and a new album called The
Man Who Killed Love, showcasing
the rawer and more bluesy side of his
sound. Comparisons to Springsteen
grow more apt.
JOHNATHAN WALKER & FRIENDS
(Georgia Bar) The songwriter performs
some tunes solo but will also welcome
some friends up on stage for a few.

LES NAPOLEONES (Tasty World)
New local trio featuring Tyler Averitt on
drums, Jacques Mouledoux on bass
and Johnny Valentine on guitar, with all
three cont r ibuting vocals.
THE LONELY HEARTS (40 Watt)
Nashville band The Lonely Hearts
recently dropped Paper Tapes, a collec
tion of easy-going American rockers in
the vein of the Heartbreakers and such
LONG LEGGED WOMAN
(Caledonia) Vaguely drony and mostly
noisy, the duo of Gabe Vodicka and
Justin Flowers plays music that's half-
improvised, half-composed, and any
given performance is rarely like the
band's last one. The band's expanded
to a quartet recently; LLW is also the
winner of this year's Flagpole Athens
Music Award in the Experimental
category. The newest EP is called
Newtown Nights.

hosts the late-night eclectic dance party
that'll draw on classic favorites as well

improv and a few covers.
PART BEAR (Tasty World) Local
songwriter Gray Griggs teams up with
Robin Cofer and Rhythm Token's Will
