“Gimme Shelter Benefit”
40 Watt Club
In March of 2006, a who's-who
of local musicians banded together
for a benefit show at the 40 Watt.
The marquee read "Gimme Shelter,"
after the lead-off track from the
Rolling Stones' '69 album Let it
Bleed, and the night featured Stones
covers with proceeds to benefit
local homeless organizations. The
concept is back this year under the
same name, though this time around, you'll find that Neil Young is the target of interpretation.
Jangly rock band Jackpot City, which these days only seems to appear at special events,
works through the tunes of the Canadian legend, as does William Tonks, who appeared last
year with his band Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreational Industry. Bluesy 70s rock
act Mother Jackson and Kimberly Morgan, whose voice is a country classic reminiscent of
Loretta Lynn, also offer interpretations.
The night closes with a band performing under the name Rusted. It's a catch-all name for
guitarists Philip McArdle and John Neff, bassist Bo Bedingfield, keyboardist Neil Golden and
drummer Clay Leverett. Rusted acts as the backing band for guest vocalists Dave Marr (ex-Star
Room Boys), Jack Logan, the Dashboard Savior duo of Rob Veal and Todd McBride, man-
about-town Frank Mason and folk trio The Solstice Sisters. As this is Athens, and as this is a
benefit show, expect a lot of cross-pollination, surprise guests and good vibes.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the music starts shortly thereafter. All proceeds from tonight's
show go to the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. And with Neil Young himself a longtime propo
nent for using music to further worthy causes, the idea's a natural. [Chris Hassiotis]
