BACK TO SCHOOL
How ends the summer of our discontent. Students are back,
and we live in Athens, and a lot of other people don't and we are
reminded all over again how special Athens is, unique in Georgia.
That the students are oblivious to us doesn't matter. We are very
much aware of them. They crowd our streets, sure, and take the
few parking spaces available while we re (not) cruising arouno
waiting for that Christian, troop-supporting SUV to throw on the
backup lights in time for us to stop and block the pickup behind
us with the 'AU Who Wander Are Hot lost" bumpers ticker. Even in
the midst of the ungodly heat of last week and the rest of it, we ll
have to bear up under on into (Damn the prepositions, full speed
ahead!) September, Athens. GA, USA is just an interesting place
to live.
There's a lot of hard work for low pay. and many of our citizens
lack adequate jobs, health care, insurance, education, nutrition,
transportation and other basic necessities. Their plight is deepened
by students and former students also working low-paying jobs, so
that we have a high percentage of working poor. College towns are
notorious for creating this demand for low-paying jobs and atso
creating laborers to fill them.
The best thing to be said for this situation in Athens is that a
lot of people in high positions as well as a phalanx of regular citi
zens are giving their attention to domg something about Athens
poverty. Although at times it seems as if their efforts are just one
big committee meeting, they have focused a lot of attention and
energy on problems easy

This time of year when
the grocery store lines
grow long, we natives
mure ourselves to the influx of kids, knowing that their return

seven weekends for football, food, dnnk, music, fun and quantum
physics discussions
Tbw is where Athens gets really strange. It's why we r* here, re
ally, As much as the students. You may not personally brighten *it
the prospect of liguored-up red hordes, but you benefit from them.
They bring you money, whether directty or indirectly, and their cash
helps keep Athens weird and also reminds us why we want it so.
Athens has always been a university town, has always existed
to cater to the students and their handlers. Few of us would be
here without the University, and our growth and escape from pov
erty depend on the presence of the University as bait for the krnds
of industries and businesses we want to attract. The University
