The Bridges,
The Pendletons,
jaguar Club
Tasty World
Though The Bridge* -
officially started in
2002, you could say
that the group goes
back a little further
than that. The Byrd
siblings—Stacey (key- The Bridges
boards), Natalie (gui
tar), Jeremy (drums), Isaaca (bass)—and their cousin Brittany Painter (lead vocals), share
more than a similar genetic makeup. Their love of music from the '60s and 70s—years before
any of them was born—is unmistakable. Asked for specificity, Painter speaks for all and has
no trouble rattling off names: "Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, The Mamas & The Papas, David
Bowie, John Lennon, Paul McCartney..."
However, the result is no nostalgia act, and the Alabama band's originals don't come off
as twee retreads. "All the Words" is a jangly pop confection worthy of Christine McVie-styled
Fleetwood Mac (arguably the greatest influence on the sound of The Bridges). The dreamy, ad
dictive "Pieces" brings Painter's husky, commanding voice to the fore. Thanks to the multi-part
harmonies by the Byrd sisters, they pull off the feat of eking a catchy chorus out of a single
note.
If you try, you can hear all sorts of mellow gold influences on the band's new demos,
produced in L.A. by Matthew Sweet and thus far only accessible on the band's MySpace page.
Compared to any other artist this writer's ever seen on the site, the Bridges get more genuine,
impassioned pleas from all corners to make the demos available for purchase or download.
Armed with youth, good looks, strong songs, a star producer and a high-profile manager
(Atlanta's Russell Carter), it seems as though world domination is The Bridges' to lose. Asked
about the future, though, Natalie is matter-of-fact: "We're looking forward to signing with a
label," she says, "making a great record and touring nonstop." Following tonight's Tasty World
show. The Bridges are heading out on tour opening for The Bangles. (Tom Bavis]
