“TASTY TUESDAY" (Tasty World
Upstairs) This monthly event starts out
as a social mixer with relaxed beats
and the sounds of jazz, R&B, soul,
funk, and hip-hop in the background
with DJ Atlas providing the mix. At
around 11 p.m., the mic opens up to
any who've signed up, with a dance
party afterwards.
“TUESDAY NIGHT JAZZ” (Farm
255) Every Tuesday from 7-10 p.m.,
the downtown restaurant features jazz
from a revolving cast of regulars.
WILX (No Where Bar) Bred in Oxford,
MS, this four-piece formed in mid-
2005 and recently relocated to Athens.
The crew plays Southern and bluesy
classic rock.

in-demand guitarist Jesse Flavin (Liz
Durrett. Good Ship, Phosphorescent,
Folk Yous) has a new album coming
out featuring heavily sincere, propul
sive rock tunes that are a step away
from those more sedate bands.
JAY GONZALEZ (Kingpins) Nutria
keyboardist/vocalist Jay Gonzalez has
a gig in town as a “lounge singer" and
piano player, playing the standards and
covers of pop hits every Wednesday
from 8 to 11 p.m.
HANK VEGAS (40 Watt) Macon
singer-songwriter-guitarist Chad Evans
fronts his band Hank Vegas—formerly
known as The White Lightning and
counting Rob Evans, Justin Smith
and Athenians John Neff among its
crew—turning out some spacious
alt-country for fans of Gram Parsons.
Bruce Springsteen and Centro-Matic.
The Things You Are is the debut album,
recorded here in Athens at Chase Park
Transduction.

9 ON BALI (Caledonia) South
Carolina five-piece 9 on Bali at times
plays a methodical kind of indie-rock,
but the main feature here is the heavy
reliance on the gamelan, an Indonesian
ensemble of percussive and tonal
instruments including gongs, xylo
phones and drums. (Anyone remember
Macha?) Sanur is the name of the
new EP.
PRIME TIME JAZZ (Porterhouse)
Drummer Tony McCutchen, bass
ist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim
McKillip perform jazz standards for
the dinner-and-a-drink set every
Wednesday.
RAQ (Georgia Theatre) This Vermont
four-piece plays self-described “high-
performance rock and roll," infusing
.live performances with kinetic improvi
sations and powerfully charged riffs.
SLEEPY HORSES (40 Watt) Nic
Goodson's band Sleepy Horses spe
cializes in West Texas, alt-country
rockers and feedback- and loop-laced
shoegazey soundscapes. Last year's
full-length album Somewhere Out
West, Lonesome For You caught some
ears, but the band's been reworked
with a new lineup: Coy King on upright
bass, Dave Forker on drums.
BRIAN SMITH (Casa Mia) Georgia
