TOFU BABY VOL. 2?
I like the Flagpole, realty. It h highly enter
taining, generally well-written, and overall, very
informative. That is why I cannot understand
why a publication that is do well-done on every
other front insists on publishing annoying crap
tike 'Tofu Baby.' "Tofu Baby' is stupid. It isn't
well-drawn, funny, cute or in any way entertain
ing. It sucks. Every time I open the Flagpole
and realize that the editors have yet to cut that
brain-numbingly bad cartoon, it makes me want
to buy puppies, just so I can rip their heads off.
I beat my wife every time I see that crappy little
strip of space-sucking drivel published for the
world to see. I throw rocks at babies because it
hurts me so much to see the Flagpole demeaning
itself with a cube of talking tofu. Stop it. Please.
If you can't find anything to do with the empty
space, just leave it Wank. Plain white paper
would be an improvement.

less Tofu.
PRIVATIZE WATER?
J.T. Christ. I thought I was a wacko con
servative. You want to incorporate weterl?!?
{'Privatize Water,' Letters, July IB] You want to

personal note. I am sore about the Georgia Power
ownership of the Barnett Shoals area, an area
rich in archaeological history and a great place
to fish, but (which) H fenced off and has mo
tion detectors to keep out trespassers... because
they own the river. Enough natural resources are
owned by private corporations. Mr. Caine, you

difference in all these issues and that of water is
that people have choices in shipping and medi
cal care and retirement. Well, some choice and
options, not complete choice, to be fair. With
water, you don't have a choice where you get
it. It's the Oconee. If Krader takes over Kamp
Kikakee, where aie all the kids going to go to
get their second chance? I've done a good job of
trivializing your main point, that water shortages
are caused by the fact that the price of the water
doesn't change with supply and demand due to
government control. And that's a good point,
until you shoot yourself in the foot by bringing
up the government-imposed restrictions. These
restrictions accomplish the same thing that a
supply/ demand curve would accomplish, without
the negative side effects of free market reign
(rain) over natural
ubiquitous and needed
resources. I suspect
you got busted for
watering your beauti
fully manicured lawn.
Consider your fine
just another cost of
doing business, water
business, in place of
higher water prices
that would affect
everyone else. Go eat some Eggs Erroneous and
think about your next letter to the Flagpole. And
start preparing for the para-turtle invasion. It's
coming.

WITH FRED
What a group of choices on the Republican
side. We get a whole lotta nothing out of the
bulk of them that are running.
I am one of the grassroots supporters for
former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee. I
support Fred because being a former resident
of Tennessee. I saw what he was able to do af
ter a pedigreed senator left office and he took
over. Me is accomplished in many areas of life.
The most important thing for conservatives, or
more importantly those of us who art tired of
the same o^d same oid, H a new vision. Just like
Ronald Reagan in 19B0. after the failed poli
cies of Jimmy Carter and the Watergate scandal.
We need men like Fred Thompson. Someone not
afraid to address the issues. We need border se
curity and then to figure out what to do with the
ones that are here. We need strong national de
fense. We need to also worry about what happens
here at home and balance all these things.
I Support Fred.

• OCONEE SPRAWL
At the meeting of commissioners in Oconee
County on Aug. 7, Chairman Melvin Davis voted
to approve a petition to rezone 284.29 acres
which will allow construction of a large subdi
vision at the junction of a three-county area.
Construction of this
development on Old
Barnett Shoals Road
will destroy one of the
most historic sites in
Oconee County, and
this vote in favor of
sprawl by Chairman
Davis makes the coun
ty motto 'Preserving
the Historic; Looking
to the Future' seem
just plain silly. The infrastructure costs to the
citizens of the county will soar as this develop
ment opens the door to additional sprawl over
another available 600 or more acres in the im
mediate vicinity.
This is the second recent tie-breaker vote
by Chairman Davis. The previous one supported
a contract between Oconee County and Walton
County. If implemented the contract will impose
huge debt on the people of Oconee County for
many decades and will offer little control to them
over how much and in which ways the money is
spent.
In a Joint Comprehensive Plan for Oconee
County, Bishop, Bogart North High Shoals and
WatkinsviUe. citizens responding to a May IS,
2007 survey expressed great concern over spe
cific issues. Many listed the 'most critical issue
facing us today' as:
'Growth!! Much too much being built much
too fast* "Too much growth;* '...connectivity at
subdivisions;' and Too much growth too fast.'
One citizen wrote. 'Most rezone requests which
get denied result in law suit(s)which usually
result in them getting what they asked for in the
beginning, because there are no set in stone regs
to support the denial.” Others listed 'High taxes,
development;' 'Increasing pressure on property
owners;" 'Sprawl countywide;' 'Unplanned
growth in residential developments;' 'Protecting
our rural areas & environment;' and 'Effective
control of growth...'
In addition, those [citizens! drafting the plan
have also included these thoughts in their draft:
'Our vision for Oconee County is...
A diverse community where life takes on a
balanced pace with ruraL suburban and small
town lifestyles, where an excellent education
system, high tech economic opportunities, ag
ricultural activities and open space are highly
valued. In order to maintain this identity, we
must proactively plan for a sustainable future of
natural resource protection, historic preservation
(including rural historic resources, and water-
related historic places—mills, dams and factories
along streams and rivers—as well as preservation
of significant Native American sites), quality
services, a balanced tax base and appropriate
infrastructure."
Obviously, these concepts have not reached
the desk of Chairman Davis yet.

BROUN VOTER
Until I read Pete's editorial last month (Pub
Notes, July 11], I was not planning to vote in
the [congressional] runoff at alL Even though I
had never voted for a Republican before, I de
cided to vote for Paul Broun. And now I'm glad I
did. I plan to let Dr. Broun know my reasons for
the legislation I support and I encourage others
to do the same.
