The month starts off well with Bill Callahan
(40 Watt Club, Saturday, Sept. 1), the prolific
Chicagoan who used to release albums under the
name Smog. Callahan was last here in mid-2003,
and is touring on the heels of several new EPs
and a full-length. Sir Rfthard Bishop opens.
Pat Green (Georgia Theatre, Wednesday, Sept.
5) is one of a vibrant crop of grassroots art
ists who've built fanbases across the South the
old-fashioned way: heavy touring and a solid
live show. Perpetual Groove (Georgia Theatre, -
Thursday, Sept. 6-Friday, Sept. 7), the jam stal
wart and local favorite that packed the outdoor
AthFest stage earlier this summer, hits up the
Theatre with another two-night stand, a P-Groove
tradition.
Garage punk revivalist act The Black Lips (40
Watt Club, Wednesday, Sept. 12) leaves Atlanta
to play Athens once more, with The Selmanaires
and The Coathangers.
A double bill of Baroness and Zoroaster
(Repent, Thursday, Sept 20) should satisfy those
craving something heavier and more thundering,
while the next night, the members of Canadian
Do Make Say Think (40 Watt Club, Friday, Sept.
21) bring their distortion-heavy, bassy post-rock
orchestra to the 40 Watt stage. Across town,
though, you'll find Japanese punk explosion
Peelander>Z (Tasty World, Friday, Sept. 21) with
its reliably goofy, hyper-kinetic stage show.
Jason Molina (Songs:0hia) tours through
Athens again with his newest crew Magnolia
Electric Co. (40 Watt Club, Saturday, Sept. 22) to
commemorate the release of an impressive box ,
set; The Watson Twins and Drakkar Sauna open.
Jazz heavyweight Joshua Redman (Melting
Point, Saturday, Sept 22) flies into Athens with
his trio for his only show in the Southeast.
In what adds up to a particularly strong week
for the 40 Watt, just three days later, VMS or
Beta (40 Watt Club, Tuesday, Sept. 25) plays, fol
lowed by the return of ex-Drive-By Trucker Jason
Isbell and his band The 400 Unit (40 Watt Club,
Thursday, Sept. 27). Another Jason—this time
Tennessean Jason Aldean (Georgia Theatre,
Thursday, Sept. 27) is at the Theatre
that night with his hyped-up, com
fortably Southern country rock.
Corey Smith (Classic Center,
Friday, Sept. 28) got his start here in
Athens playing humble acoustic gigs
at Wild Wing and Tasty World in 2004;
he's rocketed to the point where he's
selling out shows around the region
months in advance, though tickets
for his Classic Center show are still
available.
Tasty World celebrates 10 years of
rocking downtown Athens with an an
niversary show the second weekend of
September; three nights of music will
feature All God's Children, J-Roddy
Walston & The Business, Bearfoot
Hookers and many, many more yet to be
announced.
The last half of September in town
is always packed with shows. Blonde
Redhead (40 Watt Club, Monday,
Sept. 17) turned out several killer
sets in Atlanta recently, but hasn't
been to Athens for a while. Two days
later, Taylor Swift (Georgia Theatre,
Wednesday, Sept. 19), the unbelievably
popular teen country sensation, swings
through town to play the sort of show
that she'll probably be too big to play in
another couple of months.
