Guitar worshippers should find themselves
satisfied by the four-band bill that opens the
40 Watt's October, with Mono, Coliseum, High
on Fire and Panthers (40 Watt Club, Tuesday,
Oct. 2) assaulting the sound system. Things
quiet down the next day, though, when Damien
Jurado and Okkervil River (40 Watt
Club, Wednesday, Oct. 3) stop by,
proffering fractured and emotional
folk and banjo-fueled darkly gothic
atmospherics, respectively.
The scattered-across-
the-country rock beast
Je Suis France (40 Watt
Club, Friday, Oct. 5)
lands again, this time
boasting multi-member
San Francisco rocksteady
and reggae carnival Still
Flyin' on the bill. A lot
of indie-rock fans will
turn out to see dance-
starter !!! (40 Watt Club,
Saturday, Oct. 6), but
the real find is the open
ing act The Field, an intriguing and boundary
testing Swedish electronic act on the respected
Kompakt record label.
It's a rare Monday when two must-see shows
happen in Athens, but that's the case the second
week of October. The Brunettes (Tasty World,
Monday, Oct. 8) out of New Zealand played
two shows in Athens in 2005 in the span of a
month, outshining headliner The Shins with its
expansive, catchy pop. If pop shimmer's not your
thing. The Melvins (40 Watt, Monday, Oct. 8) set
up shop on the other end of downtown.
Electronic Israeli duo Infected Mushroom
(Georgia Theatre, Wednesday, Oct. 10), despite
the godawful name, plays some curiously strong
stuff that's psychedelic and trancey, and a decent
substitute for those who couldn't make it to
Ibiza this summer. Mississippi's Bobby Valentino
(UGA Tate Center Georgia Hall, Wednesday, Oct.
10) offers up a smooth brand of R8.B romance
rarely seen in Athens.
In 2004, the Def Jux tour brought RJD2 and
Mr. Lif through town, but since then, indepen
dent, quality big-name hip-hop and rap has
skipped over Athens. The Theatre remedies that
with Del tha Funkee Homosapien (Georgia
Theatre, Thursday, Oct. 11). The Hieroglyphics/
Gorillaz/ Deltron 3030 guy brings along
Houston's progressive weed-rhymer Devin the
Dude, as well as The Coughee Brothaz and
Bukue One.
Keep an eye out for the "WUOG 30th
Anniversary Show" (40 Watt Club, Saturday, Oct.
13), though details haven't been announced yet.
QUI (40 Watt Club, Tuesday, Oct. 16) and the
pairing of Boris & Michio Kurihara (40 Watt
Club, Tuesday, Oct.
23) make for rare solid
Tuesday snows, while
idiosyncratic classical
New Englander Martin
Sexton (Georgia
Theatre, Tuesday, Oct.
23) turns out his guitar
styles as well.
Some kind of liter
ate indie-rock wet
dream gets realized
with Art Brut and The
Hold Steady (40 Watt
Club, Thursday, Oct.
25) on the same bill.
Classic '90s alternative
rock band Nada Surf
(40 Watt Club, Monday,
Oct. 29) has been
steadily plugging away
over the years.
Halloween's always
a special night, and
though the details
for 2007 have yet to
develop, one definite
is Of Montreal (40
Watt Club, Wednesday,
Oct. 31). The group
comes back to Athens
from another tour
with MGMT and Grand
Buffet opening, prov
ing that these now-
famous types can still
show their hometown a
good time.
