and Israeli children, who, though only
separated by 20 geographical minutes,
live worlds apart. Filmmakers follow
the children around Jerusalem, from a
Palestinian refugee camp to an Israeli
settlement, to show how deeply rooted
the problems in the Middle East have
become Nominated for an Academy
Award for Best Documentary Feature,
as well as for two Independent Spirit
Awards Part of the ACC Library's
iFilms series. Shows Thursday. 8/23

RATATOUILLE (G)Remythe rat
(Patton Oswalt) dreams of being a
top chef. Garbage boy Linguine (Lou
Romano) doesn't want to lose another
job. Together they become the gastro
nomic sensation of Paris. Ratatouille
again proves Pixar is king. Directed by
Brad Bird (The Incredibles). (Carmike)
RESURRECTING THE CHAMP (PG-
13) The Champ is a homeless man
(Samuel L. Jackson) believed to be a
deceased boxin. Early word has Champ
challenging for vear-end awards, espe
cially for the supporting turns by Alan
Alda and Peter Coyote. Opens Friday
(Carmike)
RUSH HOUR 3 (PG-13) Rush Hour
3 is a pleasant enough diversion that
never achieves the giddy fun of the
first two installments. RH3 displaces
Chris Tucker's Detective James Carter
and Jackie Chan's Chief Inspector Lee
in the City of Lights, where they must
bring the Chinese Triad to its knees
Tired and repetitive, the buddy flic*
remains an entertaining hour and a
half due to the concrete chemistry of
its two leads Returning director Brett
Ratner moves the movie along steadily
enough, but RH3 is missing the action
and the comedy that made the first
two flicks so surprisingly entertaining
(Beechwood, Carmike)
< SEPTEMBER DAWN (R) This
fictional account of the Mountain
Meadows Massacre, where over 100
settlers were slaughtered by a Mormon
sect, has been criticized by everyone
from the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints to right-wing conser
vatives. Directed by Christopher Cain
(Young Guns), September Dawn stars
Jon Voight, Dean Cain and Terence
Stamp. Opens Friday (Carmike)
SHREK THE THIRD (PG) After the
death of King Harold, Shrek (voiced by
Mike Myers) and friends strike out in
search of a new king. Fiona (Cameron
Diaz)deals with Prince Charming
Shrek the Third is the weakest of
the franchise's three films (Georgia
Square 5)
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (PG-13) My
fandom firmly established during the
show’s initial cult phase, I can t help
but greet the unwanted, long-gestating
feature version of this cultural institu
tion with a single. ’D'oh!’ As “South
Park’ presciently declared. "Simpsons
did it.' They’ve done it so much that
most every surreal plot turn and non
sensical gag - most meriting a chuckle
but none worth busting a gut over - are
recycled. Neither as smart nor as
witty as the once great “Simpsons’ of
the mid-1990s, the meekly amusing
Simpsons Movie cannot justify the
ticket price (Beechwood, Carmike)
STARDUST (PG-13) While Stardust
doth possess a wonderfully romantic
hero, this faux fairy-tale adapted from
the Neil Gaiman bestseller isn’t quite
the neo-Princess Bride many wish it
to be. Director Matthew Vaughn and
co-writer Jane Goldman ably stream
line Tristran’s (Charlie Cox) quest for
fallen star Yvaine (Claire Danes), while
expanding the his crusade to save his
true love from the evil witch Lamia
(Michelle Pfeiffer) Stardust brims with
the confidence of a story well-told
Too bad the film lacks the star power
or the cohesive, suitable marketing
campaign to connect with its audience
(Beechwood. Carmike)
SUPERBAD (R) See Movie Pick.
(Beechwood, Carmike)
UNDERDOG (PG) Underdog attempts
to make the concept of the silly ‘60s
cartoon so acceptably realistic and
scientifically believable that it becomes
boring and trite. Why can't Underdog/
Shoeshine (voiced by Jason Lee of
“My Name is Earl*) just be a talk
ing, flying super dog? Your typical
charmless, dumbed-down family fare,
Underdog w\\\ only please the wee
ones. (Beechwood); Ends Thursday
(Carmike)
“VINTAGE TV NIGHT: POLICE
SOUAD (IN COLOR!)" (NR) 1982
From the makers of Airplane! See the
complete classic series that kicked
off the Naked Gun trilogy. Detective
Frank Drebbin (Leslie Nielson) brings
down the bad guys while philosophi
cally pondering fixed fights, low-rent
floozies and cheap hoods. And don't
call him Shirley. Shows Wednesday,
8/22 (Flicker)
WAR (R) I typically find myself caught
up in Jason Statham’s crappy action
flicks. (I enjoyed Crank far more than I
should have and still feel bad about it.)
Statham plays a rogue FBI agent with a
bead on the assassin (Jet Li) who killed
his partner Opens Friday (Beechwood,
Carmike)
WHEN THE ROAD BENDS: TALES
OF A GYPSY CARAVAN (NR) 2006
This film peers into Romani culture
as five bands from four countries tour
the United States (Johnny Depp ap
pears to extol the virtues of one group,
the Romanian Taraf de Haidouks, an
180-piece ensemble that appeared in
his The Man Who Cried.) Directed by
Jasmine Detlal, Gypsy Caravan was
partly shot by Academy Award nominee
Albert Maysles Winner of the Audience
Award at the Flanders International
Film Festival Starts Friday (Cin6)
