numbers every Wednesday.
JESSE FLAVIN (Little Kings) In-
demand guitarist Jesse Flavin (Liz
Durrett, Good Ship, Phosphorescent,
Folk Yous) has a new album coming
out featuring heavily sincere, propul
sive rock tunes that are a step away
from those more sedate bands.
JAY GONZALEZ (Kingpins) Nutria
keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has
a gig in town as a 'lounge singer’ and
piano player, playing the standards and
covers of pop hits every Wednesday
from 8 to 11 p.m.
HANK VEGAS (40 Watt) Macon sing
er-songwriter/ guitarist Chad Evans
fronts his band Hank Vegas—formerly
known as The White Lightning,
counting Rob Evans, Justin Smith
and Athenians John Neff among its
crew—turning out some spacious
alt-country for fans of Gram Parsons.
Bruce Springsteen and Centro-Matic.
The Things You Are is the debut album,
recorded here in Athens at Chase Park
Transduction.

THE MARQUEE BLUES (Eastwood
Pub) The Marquee Blues features
members of the Michael Guthrie Band
and The 60s playing classic British

MIKEY DWYER & THE STARTER
KITS (40 Watt) Now with the backing
of drummer Ben Keller (Timber) and
bassist Jamie Coulter (The Help),
Mikey Dwyer (Lona. Scalded Dogs,
Sateen Duraluxe) plays brash and
handy rock and roll, and has a new
recording project called Backsliding
Baby in the works.
MISSISSIPPI JOHN OOUDE (Tasty
World) Calling both Hattiesburg, MS,
and Milledgeville, GA .home, solo act
Mississippi John Doude whips up
a soup of working-class rock, dusty
blues and hillbilly folk He's got a self-
titled album out now.
9 ON BALI (Caledonia) South
Carolina five-piece 9 on Bali at lime*'
plays a methodical kind of indie-rock,
but the main feature here is the heavy
reliance on the gamelan, an Indonesian
ensemble of percussive and tonal
instruments including gongs, xylo
phones and drums. (Anyone remember
Macha?) Sanur is the name of the
new EP.
PRIME TIME JAZZ (Porterhouse)
Drummer Tony McCutchen, bass
ist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim
McKillip perform jazz standards for
the dinner-and-a-drink set every
Wednesday.
RAQ (Georgia Theatre) This Vermont
four-piece plays self-described ‘high-
performance rock and roll,’ infusing
live performances with kinetic improvi
sations and powerfully charged riffs.
SLEEPY HORSES (40 Watt) Nic
Goodson's band Sleepy Horses spe
cializes in West Texas, alt-country
rockers and feedback- and loop-laced
shoegazey soundscapes. Last year’s
full-length album, Somewhere Out
West, Lonesome For You, caught some
ears, but the band has been reworked
with a new lineup: Coy King on upright
bass, Dave Forker on drums.
BRIAN SMITH (Casa Mia) Georgia
Guitar Quartet member Brian Smith
plays classical guitar every Wednesday
night at the downtown tapas restaurant.

THE SUEX-EFFECT (Georgia Theatre)
The trio of guitarist Ricky Barrett,
drummer Jonathan Daniels and bassist
Miles Karp plays psychedelicized funk
rock instrumentals, relying on spacey
harmonies. Faces of the Tree is the
debut full-length.
TIMBER (Little Kings) Last year's full-
length album from the local alt-country
band is called Dark Heart... Lucky
Hand There've been some lineup
shifts in the group recently; should
be a rawer presentation of lead singer
Daniel Aaron's wistful, fiery country
pop. The brand-new album is For
Never & Always.
TWIN POWERS (Go Bar) Spinning
danceable New Wave and Britpop
tunes. 10 p.m., every Wednesday

(Melting Point) Every week, local
singer-songwriter Jay Markwalter
opens and hosts this series which
aims to focus on artists proficient in
the craft of songwriting. This week
the spotlight shines on Mike Dekle.

BIG C& THE RINGERS (No Where
Bar) Big badass blues singer Clarence
“Big C" Cameron (ex-Kingfish) left
Athens for Memphis in December of
2001, but returns tonight to play a
special reunion with his bandmates—
current and former members of bands
like Tishamingo, Snap! and King
Daddy Zeb. Before they were Big C &
the Ringers, they were known as Don't
Know, and played a Chicago-styled
electric blues infused with a whole
lotta soul.
BO BEDINGFIELD & THE
WYDELLES (Caledonia) If
Springsteen had followed up Nebraska
with Georgia, it might’ve sounded
something like Bo Bedingfield’s debut
album The World is Ending, Show
Some Decorum. Bedingfisld has been
recording some new tunes recently
for another release, and tonight he’s
backed by his crackerjack band of all-
star locals.
JUNIOR BROWN (Melting Point)
Texas musician Junior Brown is a pro
at the guit-steel, a combination guitar-
steel instrument specially made for his
needs. His double-decker approach
allows him to take a patchwork journey
through country, rock and roll, rocka
billy and honky-tonk. See p. 29
CACHAQA (Amici) Playing Brazilian-
styled music, this new band features
Jake Mowrer (nylon-stringed guitar)
and Jim Coley (upright bass) of Hot
Club of Athens and Kane Stanley and
Ryan Wendel of Groaus, among other
groups, on percussion. Every other
Thursday.
CHRIS ENGHAUSER SUPER
COMBO (Farm 255) Local jazz bass
ist Chris Enghauser leads this large
and collaborative septet, which will
include names familiar to local jazz
fans: Kevin Hyde, Dave D’Angelo and
Louis Romanos, among others. Expect
horns, piano, bass and drums in the
mix. ’Sort of Art Blakey/ shuffle/ bebop
three-horn arrangements with some
originals.’ says Enghauser 8 p m.
CLAY LEVERETT & JOHN NEFF
(Melting Point) Clay Leverett is the
country crooner and guitarist who
fronts bands like Lona and The
Chasers, and John Neff is the pedal-
steel pro currently at home with the
Drive-By Truckers, though he's a hired
gun in many a local act. Tonight, the
two pair up to open for Junior Brown.
THE CORDUROY ROAD (Hot Corner
Coffee) Recently transplanted from
Kentucky to Athens, this small acoustic
outfit uses bluegrass instruments—
banjo, guitar, harmonica—but departs
for a less traditional sound.
ANNIE CRANE (Hot Corner Coffee)
New York's Annie Crane tackles
traditional folk topics in her acoustic
performances—check out “Nowhere
to Go’ for a FEMA-era New Orleans
lament, which highlight’s Crane’s Baez/
Williams vocals. Violinist Maya Roney
frequently accompanies.
“DEVILNECK METALFEST”
(Repent) The downtown club hosts a
bevy of heavy bands in the metal cat
egory, running the gamut of subgenres.
The three-day festival kicks off tonight;
see p. 31 for a full rundown of what’s
going on.
DJ BABY PANDAS (Go Bar)
Following tonight's two bands,
Flagpole music editor Chris Hassiotis
spins a danceable set of retro soul and
throwback garage rock with a helping
of current stuff. Tonight, he’s focusing
on a healthy amount of ‘60s French y6-
y6 girl pop. 11 p.m.
DJ RIX (Loft) Championing dance
favorites every Thursday, Atlanta's x
DJ Rix favors breakbeat and hip-hop
mixes. He recently collaborated with
Louisiana's Trace on a new mix called
TR-IXX.
DJ WET WHISTLE (Detour) Orange
Twin chief Laura Carter (Elf Power.
Nana Grizol) and Theo Hilton (Nana
Grizol, Zumm Zumm) select the tunes
for the late-night dancing after tonight's
live music.
DJRX (Rumor) The bar's house deejay
plays party tracks, mainly current pop
with old-school and country accents,
many of which are his own remixes.
THE H.E.A.P. PROJECT (40 Watt)
Bryan Howard (Slackdaddy, Kevn
Kinney) brings his new band out to
night for its second local performance.
The sounds are subtly funky, at times
minimal and with grooving jazz influ
ences and strong percussion. Fans of
Morphine could dig this.
HONEY (Little Kings) J.S. Dillard
brings out his infrequently perform
ing band Honey with its new lineup.
Influences include classic rock like
the Faces, T. Rex. the Stones and Tom
Petty.
JAGGERY (Go Ba r ) New York singer-
pianist Mali Sastri and her band,
which can include instrumentation
like conirabass, harp and theremin,
create a dramatic, jazz-infused sound
of gloomy exoticism. A hazy Cocteau
Twins? Polyhymnia is the band's latest
full-length. “Early’ show, 9 p.m.
