Elvis Presley from this mortal kingdom
to the great beyond 30 years ago.
Music from all stages of the King's
career, along with plenty of other music
from the '50s and ‘60s thrown in for
good measure. Free fried peanut-
butter-and-banana sandwiches will
be involved. Elvis impersonators will

Formerly-local-now-Atlantan musician
Count Kellam conjures thoughts of Jett
Buckley. Fiona Apple and Roy Orbison
No word whether this is solo or with
his Athens-based backing-band; expect
some still-under-construction songs
from Kellams forthcoming album.
GABRIEL KELLEY (Saving Grace)
Gabriel Kelley Zorbanos (ex-Gabriel
Young) plays heartfelt acoustic folk
music informed by rustic country
and Appalachian sounds He recently
moved to Nashville but is back in town
for a while. 7:30 p m at the Comer
restaurant.
CHARLIE LOUVIN (Melting Point)
During the 1940s and 50s, Charlie and
Ira Louvin were The louvm Brothers, a
country duo performing close harmony,
a type of sound growing out ot gospel
and bridging the secular and the holy.
Ira passed away in 1965 and Charlie
soldiered on, pursuing a solo career
and amassing an impressive body of
work. His rich tones and distinctive
croon have appeared on numerous
recordings over the years, and this cur
rent tour with a lull band celebrates his
80th birthday
MATIAS (Caledonia) Local singer
Nicole Matias plays pretty, delicate
and dreamy music with acoustic and
electric guitar and airy vocals, and it's a
little reminiscent of Azure Ray. Happy-
hour show starting around 6 p.m.
MODERN SKIRTS (40 Watt) This
piano-driven local pop group's firm
grasp of melody is its strongest suit
and the four guys in the Skirts have
gone a long way to charm Athens. The
2005 debut full-length is Catalogue
of Generous Men, a harmony-soaked
collection of pop numbers that bridges
the Beatles and Ben Folds. Tonight the
band’s showing a new music video; see
details on p. 33.
P. L. NOON (Flicker) Parker Noon,
frontman and songwriter tor The Low
Lows and formerly of Parker & Lily,
performs a solo set tonight. Will he
tone back the vocal distortion on his
neo-Western-shoegaze soundscapes
for Flicker's intimate setting'!’ Be there

THE OLD CEREMONY (40 Watt)
Chapel Hill. NC. band The Old
Ceremony is fronted by Django
Haskins (ex-International Orange), the
band pulls on American 70s rock and
earlier stutt for an intriguingly lush,
literate sound.
SEVEN 7 (Alibi) This regional cover
band selects a mix ot ’60s soul, 70s
disco and 80s pop with a mix of con
temporary and classic rock
MAH STOESSEL (Flicker) Matt
“Pistol’ Stoessel. who lends his pedal
steel to a bevy ol local bands and also
heads up his own act Lake City, plays
an acoustic solo set of originals 8:30
p.m.

newly local. Summerbirds in the Cellar
recently recorded the shimmery, driv

got laws against acts with few original
members using the same name as that
ol the band they're paying tribute to.
but that's not the case in most places.
