sponsible portrait ot religious zealotry,
September Dawn paints Mormonism
with a negative stroke broader than
“Big Love.’ Then again, director-
cowriter Christopher Cainls (Young
Guns) tilm should not have to white
wash this horrific episode in the—let's
call it colorful—history of Smith's
sect. However, the Mountain Meadows
incident deserves to be recounted by a
superior film. (Carmike)
SHREK THE THIRD (PG) After the
death of King Harold. Shrek (voiced by
Mike Myers) and friends strike out in
search of a new king. Meanwhile, Fiona
(Cameron Diaz) must deal with Prince
Charming. Shrek the Third is the weak
est of the franchise’s three films. Ends
Thursday (Georgia Square 5)
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (PG-13)
My fandom firmly established (luring
the show's initial cult phase (a status
long since revoked), I can't help but
greet the unwanted, long-gestating
feature version of this cultural institution
with a single' ‘D’ohT As "South Park"
presciently declared, "Simpsons did
it’ They've done it so much that most
every surreal plot turn andmonsensical
gag - most meriting a chuckle but none
worth busting a gut over - are recycled.
Additionally, the major irritant plaguing
the last few seasons of ’The Simpsons'
recurs in The Simpsons Movie. The
once misguided but genuine Homer has
become an unforgivably self-seeking
egotist constantly being punished for his
misdeeds. As Homer has devolved, so
has creator Matt Greening's brilliant pro
gram, more prone to take the easy joke
out its patriarch as opposed to fostering
the family^ development. At eighty-five
minutes, The Simpsons Movie is forced
to slight many of Springfield's favored
denizens out of plot-fueled necessity;
I’d rather spend more time with Krusty.
Apu, Moe, Ralph, or (insert your favorite
resident] than on Horner^ trek through
the Alaskan wilds. Neither as smart nor
as witty as the once great ‘Simpsons’
of the mid-nineties, the meekly amus
ing, three-episodes-strung-together
Simpsons Movie cannot justify the
ticket price (Carmike); Ends Thursday
(Beechwood)
SOMETHING LIKE HAPPINESS
(NR) 2005. This award-winning Czech
film follows three childhood friends
as they struggle with the jealous crav
ings of adulthood. Something Like
Happiness waltzed away with eight
Czech Lions), including Best Film, Best
Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting
Actress, and Best Director. Part of the
ACC Library^ iFilms series. Shows
Thursday. 8/30 (ACC Library)
STARDUST (PG-13) Director Matthew
Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman
streamline Tristran’s (Charlie Cox)
quest tor failerrstar Yvaine (Claire
Danes), while expanding his crusade
to save his true love from the evil witch
Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer). A rare im
provement upon the slim tome by Neil
Gaiman that inspired it, too bad the film
lacks the star power or the cohesive
marketing campaign to connect with its
audience. (Carmfke); Ends Thursday
(Beechwood)
SUPERBAD (R) The super-raunchy
adventures of best buds and lovable
losers Seth (Michael Cera, "Arrested
Development’) and foul-mouthed Evan
(Jonah flit I) as they seek beer and sex
was waiting for the ribald, heartfelt
guidance of producer Judd Apatow, the
writer-director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin
and Knocked Up. Less cartoonish, more
real, and megatons more nastily funny
than American Pie, Superbad captures
in almost documentarian fashion the
life and travails of the geeky—read
normal—high-school male. Superbad
ensures that Apatow will have many
more opportunities to delight and dis
gust us all. (Beechwood, Carmike)
UNDERDOG (PG) Underdog attempts
to make the concept of the silly *60s
cartoon so acceptably realistic and
scientifically believable that it becomes
boring and trite. Why cant Underdog/
Shoeshine (voiced by Jason Lee of
“My Name is Earl’) just be a talk
ing, flying super dog? Your typiccl
charmless, dumbed-down family fare,
Underdog will only please the wee
ones (Beechwood)
WAR (R) In War, an action movie as
generic and humdrum as its title, the
usually charismatic Jason Statham gets
out-appealed by a nearly monosyllabic
Jet Li (God only knows why the aging
Asian superstar came out of retirement
for this tired retread). FBI agent Jack
Crawford (Statham) has been tracking
a mysterious hitman, known only as
Rogue (Li). Now, in the midst of an all-
out war raging between the Japanese
Yakuza and the Chinese Triads.
Crawford draws a bead on the elusive
Rogue. War has little to offer, espe
cially to its core constituency of action
junkies, who should find the piddling
amount of martial arts mayhem and
general destruction not enough to even
get a good testosterone buzz going.
(Beechwood, Carmike)
W.C. FIELDS FESTIVAL (NR)
Featuring three of Fields’ child-
hating best—IPs a Gift, You Can't
Cheat an Honest Man and The Bank
Dick—flicker's W.C. Fields Festival is
a great way to get to know a superb old
comedian. From Flicker guy Clint: ’WC
Fields had both an immense talent for
understated dialogue and an ability
to be simultaneously put-upon and
subtly outraged that makes for a smart
and uniquely charming combination.’
Shows Tuesday, 9/4 (Flicker)
WHEN THE ROAD BENDS: TALES
OF A GYPSY CARAVAN (NR) 2006
When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy
Caravan peers into Romani culture as
five bands from four countries tour the
United States. Winner of the Audience
Award at the Flanders International
Film Festival. Ends Thursday (Cin6)
