PETER ALVANOS (Mama’s Boy,
Georgia Museum of Art) Happy hour
shows 9 Pshaw Fabulous Bird frontman
Peter Alvanos performs today at the
local restaurant at 7:30 a m —yes, in
the morning—offering up a breakfast
time set of a few covers and original
psychedelic pop-rock tunes. And then
from 5 to 7 p.m., Alvanos plays at the
Georgia Museum of Art as part of its
“Figgie's at Five” event.
BEFORE THE SOLSTICE (Tasty
World) Playing heavily melodic rock
and roll, this new local trio pulls on
sounds of classic 70s pop as well as
‘90s alternative rock.
BLOODKIN (Georgia Bar) The long-
running Athens rock and roll quartet
non-traditional hip-hop talents Old
White Women, Rorshak and Produce
Man, trading verses and spitting pro
vocative, kinetic rhymes; several of the
individual contributors also have their
own new records out. Winners of the
Hip-Hop / Rap 2007 Flagpole Athens
Music Award. Benefit show for new lo

perhaps this’ll be tunes spun by folks
from local hardcore punk act American
Cheeseburger Benefit show for new
local DIY venue!
DJ REBB (Detour) Taking a step away
from his usual mixes and contem
porary stuff, DJ Rebb tonight hosts a
dance party culling sounds from the
’80s.
DJ SIZZLE (Loft) Spinning the dance
numbers every Wednesday.

(40 Watt) Whether you want to watch
Garbage Island or participate,
tonight's your chance to do either. "It’s
a response to so many people asking
to sit in with us,” says Craig Lieske,
one of the local improv-rock bandls
guitarists. The open-ended evening
returned to town and to local music
after years away—drummer Bob
Fernandez (The Plague, ex-Star
Room Boys) and bassist-vocalist Rob
Kelleher (ex-Dime Bag).
HOT NEW MEXICANS (Little Kings)
Vocalist-guitarist Patrick Jennings and
drummer Joe Dakin moved to Athens
and recruited Carrie Nations' Ian
McCord to play bass, creating catchy,
punk-influenced, boozy power pop.
The band's 2005 release is Its Called
Leaning Back, and the new vinyl T is
the four-song Wah.... Benefit show for
new local DIY venue!

KEN WILL MORTON & THE
WHOLLY GHOSTS (Georgia Theatre)
Rough-and-tumble American rock guy
Ken Will Morton, former host of the
Melting Points songwriter series, is
back with another incarnation of his
frequently changing backing band The
Wholly Ghosts. This time around he’s
got Jeremy Cole (ex-Winter Sounds)
on drums and Kyle Tuttle on bass.
LITTLE FRANCIS (Caledonia) A sup
posedly “stripped-down* version ot the
rock songs of Steve Grubbs (Dream
Girls, ex-Breakheart Beat). Backing up
Little Francis this time around you’ve
got Jordan Noe! (ex-Breakheart Beat)
on drums and local songwriter Brian
Connell on guitar and harmonica.
THE MARQUEE BLUES (Eastwood
Pub) The Marquee Blues features
members of the Michael Guthrie Band
and The 60s playing classic British
blues-influenced rock like that of
Clapton and Cream. Every Wednesday
from 9 p.m. to midnight.
NAPOLEON SOLO .Wild Wing Caf6)
Napoleon Solo is the multitasking one-
man-band who handles it all.
Team 6ina is playing at Little Kings on Friday, August 31
plays a bluesy style of roots-rock mu
sic with big guitars and sharply written
lyrics. Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter
are the songwriting backbone, slinging
out darkly countrified barroom rock.
Last Night Out is 20051s most recent
full-band album; Hutchens has a great
new acoustic album out called Love

THE BOLD SLUG (Little Kings) The
Bold Slog* a new(ish), fun local DIY
punk band formerly known as Society
ot Probable Monsters. Benefit show for

BRGR TRSH (Tasty World) With
Joseph Brinkley on vocals. Paul
Hammond on bass. Robert Herndon
on guitar and Jason McLain on drums,
this local band plays hard rock with
heavy metal influences.
DEAF JUDGES (Little Kings)
Collaborative project features Athens'
also serves as a benefit show for Nugi’s

JESSE FLAVIN (Little Kings) The
in-demand guitarist Jesse Flavin (Liz
Durrett, Good Ship, Phosphorescent.
Folk Yous) has a new album coming
out featuring heavily sincere, propul
sive rock tunes that are a step away
from those more sedate bands. Benefit

JAY GONZALEZ (Kingpins) Nutria
keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has
a gig in town as a 'lounge singer* and
piano player, playing the standards and
covers ot pop hits every Wednesday
from 8 to 11 p.m.
THE HEATHENS (Caledonia) Local
music vets debut their new band
tonight. Falling somewhere between
■hillbilly music and alternative rock,'

Coffee) Malcolm Rollick is a Rruoktyn-

like those of Kimya Dawson or Joni
