at home on early *90$ rock radio along

BILL MALLONEE ft VICTORY
GARDEN (Melting Point) The engine
behind seminal Athens outfit Vigilantes
of Love, Bin Mallonee takes his love
ot twangy, soulful pop to the near-
perfection on his numerous recent
releases. Performing in Athens since
the late '80s. Mallonee has moved
through post-punk pop, Americana and
alt-county. Songs of sorrow, songs of
love, songs ot truth: twelve-string sto
rytelling in the vein of Neil Young and
Bob Dylan. Tonight he swings through
town with his full backing band.
BRENT BEST ft FRIENDS (Flicker)
Brent Best, formerly of Slobberbone,
currently fronts The Drams. That band
•ast year released its powerful debut
album Jubilee Dive, a gut-punch of
sound that's more rock-and-roll than
alt-country. Tonight he performs with
some of his Athenian pals, including
Garbage Island guy Craig Lleske.

PETER CASE (Melting Point) Veteran
guitarist Peter Case (The Nerves, The
Plimsouls) has been focusing on his
solo work for more than 20 years, de
veloping traditional acoustic blues and
folk sounds while also delving heavily
into the work of other artists; his sparse
latest release Let Us Now Praise Sleepy
John, for instance, is a nod towards the
Tennessee blues great.
CACHAQA (Farm 255) Playing
Brazilian-styled music, this new band
features Jake Mowrer (nylon-stringed
guitar) and Jim Coley (upright bass) of
Hot Club of Athens and Kane Stanley
and Ryan Wendel of Grogus, among
other groups, on percussion.
CHRIS PIERSON BAND (40 Watt)
Atlanta rocker Chris Pierson and his
omnipresent vest lead this quartet
through balladry fused with rocking
yet well-manicured intensity; think
Marvelous 3, Muse or Soundgarden
CITY SLEEPS (40 Watt) Anthemic
rock act City Sleeps hails from the
Atlanta suburbs, where its blend of
high-energy, soaring vocals, har
monizing hard-rock guitar lines and
expansive keyboard rock has appar
ently caught the attention of the dudes
from Goldfinger and Limp Bizkit. Debut
album out last summer.
CRUMBLING ARCHES (Tasty World)
Theatrical, over-the-top melodic rock
from Atlanta's four-piece Crumbling
Arches. Best feature? A capable rhythm
section makes up for predictable ‘rock’
vocals. Full-length album out soon.
DJ MAHOGANY (Little Kings) Freaky
funk, deep disco, solid soul—it's a
cornucopia of classic ass-shakery
from the ‘60s, 70s and ‘80s that DJ
Mahogany, winner of the 2007 Flagpole
Athens Music Award in the DJ cat
egory, provides tonight at midnight.
DJ REBB (Detour) Atlanta* DJ Rebb
plays Top 40, hip-hop. progressive
house and other electronic sounds
prime for dancing. Starting at midnight
after the Classic City Kings drag show.

DJ RIX (Loft) Championing dance
favorites every Thursday, Atlanta*
DJ Rix favors breakbeat and hip-hop
mixes. He recently collaborated with
Louisiana* Trace on a new mix called
TR-IXX.
DJRX (Rumor) The local deejay plays
party tracks, mainly current pop with
old school and country accents, many
of which are his own remixes.
FOREVER CURSED (Repent) Metal
five-piece from southern Missouri.
THE FUTURISTS (Tasty World) Fast-
paced, anthemic and rhythmic indie
rock from the new Atlanta four-piece
of John Lindsey (vocals, guitar), Matt
McDaniel (bass), Matt DeBusschere
(drums) and Alan Poole (guitar). Axis
and Allies is 2005* debut EP.
CORTEZ GARZA (Little Kings) Local
singer-songwriter Cortez Garza used to
front North Carolina emo band Mason
Curse, but has since relocated to
Athens and turned to a more acoustic
trade. He’s also the host of Hot Corner*
Tuesday open mic night.
GOOD-BYE DONOVAN (Little Kings)
With Emmie Beretta on vocals, guitar
and keys, Neal Nelson on bass, Carter
Boss on guitar and Casey Kelly on
drums, this new Athens band plays
rock and roll with a little country pop
on some songs, a lot more bratty an
themic punk on others.
HELLO LEFTY (Tasty World) Piano
pop and guitar r xk five-piece out of
Augusta.
IMMUZIKATI0N ft MP3J VINAL
(Mercury Lounge) Alfredo Lapuz
(Velveteen Pink) and Richard Vinai
(Bling the Children Back Home) have
a deep love tor dance music, and
it shows in their respective bands.
They’ve also got these deejay alter-egos
to get the bodies moving with funk, pop
and current dance sounds. 11 p.m.

KEN WILL MORTON ft THE
WHOLLY GHOSTS (Little Kings)
Rough-and-tumble American rock guy
Ken Will Morton, former host of the
Melting Point* songwriter series, is
back with another incarnation of his
frequently changing backing band, The
Wholly Ghosts. This time around, he*
got Jeremy Cole (ex-Wmter Sounds)
on drums and Kyle Tuttle on bass.
LENNEX (40 Watt) Pari Math, Part
Euphoria is the title of the new disc
from Maryland's Lennex, a heavy rock
band combining a hard-hitting rhythm
section with early-‘90s‘sounding guitar
and vocals.
LONA (Caledonia) Lona is the flagship
band for local songwriter, guitarist and
drummer Clay Leverett (The Chasers,
Now It* Overhead, ex-Drip). The band
sends out more than a little country
and more than enough gutsy, mid-
tempo rock.
LOVE IN OCTOBER (Tasty World)
Easily digestible power-pop and
crunchy emo. a little like a more pop-
oriented Foo Fighters. Early show,
5:30 p.m.
MAMA'S LOVE (Georgia Theatre)
This new local funk/ jam six-piece
plays original tunes but also covers
the classic songs that have shaped
and inspired their musical growth.*
Formerly known as Funkward Bound.
MISFORTUNE 500 (Little Kings)
Hook-heavy, mid-tempo local rock
with a strong melodic backing and
an enthusiastic stage show. The band
released a self-titled debut EP a while
back, and the new release is the full-
length Before This Winter Ends.
MOGUS (Georgia Theatre) Local jam
band.
THE MUSICSMITHS (La Dolce Vita)
Every Thursday night, guitarist Brian
Smith (Georgia Guitar Quartet) and
flautist Natalie Smith (Grogus) play
classical music duets 7:30—10:30 p.m.
THE PENNYROYALS (40 Watt)
Hailing from suburban New York/ New
Jersey, this band plays an accessible,
saccharine sort of pop-punk of the
Warped Tour variety.
PRODUCTO (Caledonia) Athens’
Producto centers around the magnetic
stage presence of vocalist An6 Diaz and
the guitar work of Frank MacDonell,
while Creston Spiers holds down the
drum kit and Keith Reardigan is now
on bass. The band plays an entrancing,
dramatic blend of intense rock meshed
with heartbroken siren songs. Producto
3 is the new disc.
SLEEPSOUND (Tasty World) Leaves
Change is the new six-song EP from
this Chapel Hill band; expect a slow
build of mellow, croony pop-rock
numbers.
SLINGFISH (Alibi) Playing a set of
country and rock covers on the patio.
THELONIOUS (No Where Bar) Local
funk-rock quartet.
23 JINX (Tasty World) This Athens-
Atlanta trio recently released its debut
album Curtains and Cannibals, a
thrashy, sweaty sort of disc—think
Alice in Chains- or Stone Temple
Pilots-styled ‘90s rock, with a harder
edge reminiscent of bands like The
Used.
THE VINYL STRANGERS (Tasty
World) These scene vets—guitarist-
vocalist Joe Guerzo, new bassist
Tim Adams, guitarist-vocalist
Reid Howland and drummer Ian
Werden—released their new band*
self-titled debut album last June, and
it* a classic-sounding pop rock record
reminiscent of early Beatles and Byrds.

THE WINTER SOUNDS (Tasty
World) Land of No Outpjt is last year's
album from this impressively non-stop
local band. The five-piece creates a
strong mix of deft, rhythmic indie rock
with vocal flourishes that occasionally
touch on emo, exploring a variety of
song structures. New album Porcelain

ATHENS BOYS CHOIR (Little Kings)
The local duo of Katz and Rocket fo
cused on gender issues and questions
of identity for several years; Rocket
moved out of town in ‘05, and Katz,
who now tours solo, takes center stage,
delivering spoken-word rhymes with a
musical underpinning. The third Boys
Choir CD is called Jockstraps and
Unicorns.
“BATTLE @ THE LOUNGE”
(Caledonia) Tonight* monthly hip-hop
event features emcee battling among
Athens’ finest. Registration for rappers
starts at 9 p.m., while the music gets
going around 10 p.m. and the battling
around 11 p.m. No details are available
