When Eric Friar and Mandy
Branch set aside their chal
lenging (but rewarding!)
jagged post-punk band Heros
Severum, they decided to take
a step towards accessibility.
Recruiting Heros contributor
Winston Parker, the three set
off as Down With the Woo,
creating punk-influenced
electronic dance music that
dips into retro-soul and futuro-
funk. The band rarely plays
out but when it does, says
Friar, the trio aims to make
each show distinct 'Tonight,
the main idea is that we're
trying to get some content to
gether for availability online,"
he says. "We may edit this into some sort of DVD in the future, but that's still up in the air."
Local multimedia services company TSAV provides additional support at tonight's show.
TSAV is "sponsoring" Down With the Woo and will hook the band up with cameras to shoot
the shindig, as well as some extra speakers and digital video screens. "We have an extra visual
element planned that will involve a few extra projector screens," says Friar. "It's gonna look
cooL" The projections at Down With the Woo's AthFest show this year ranged from swirling
animations to garishly colored throwback images, all custom-made by Parker.
Friar attributes much of the band's technological fascination to Parker. "A lot of it is
Winston's influence," he says. "He's a computer wizard and he's learning how to do all sorts of
things, so he's applying what he's learning. To try and do things that we haven't done before.
The idea is to push ourselves. We don't even know if it'll work, but we're going to try it and
give people more of an incentive to come and see something new, something neat."
As with past Down With the Woo shows, which have been recorded through the band's
ProTools rig, tonight's gets the surround-sound treatment with speakers placed around and
throughout the audience. "For us, it's more instruments and percussion taking place in differ
ent spaces," says Friar. "Not the Pink Floyd swiping stuff." Ice Cream Socialists, Pegasuses-XL
[see p. 28] and One Man Machine open the show. [Chris Hassiotis]
