Normaltown Flyers
Allen’s
The Normaltown Flyers
christened the new Allen's
Hamburgers last weekend
at a fundraising event, and
they'll return this weekend
to try to prove that every
thing old can be new again.
Or is it that everything new
can oe old?
Vocalist-guitarist Brian
Burke and bassist Tom Ryan
will join drummer Deane
Quinter and guitarist John Keane (regular guitarist Davis Causey won't be at tonight's show,
as he'll be sitting in with Randall Bramblett over at the Melting Point). I saw them play more
than 600 times at the old Allen's, the beloved-but-gone hamburger joint on Prince Avenue.
They're pros at leading a willing ajdience back down the road to Nashville, Mayberry, Memphis
and Normaltown, as well as to points in between. The Normaltown Flyers have in their various
configurations over the last 2Q years always embodied the spirit of AUen's.
The gray facade on the new Allen’s, located at 810 Hawthorne Ave., recreates a look similar
to the Normaltown location. Local artist Stephanie Cowan, a Normaltown blue-blood if ever
there were one, has recreated Chatham Murray's murals from the front of the building. The
black-and-white checkerboard floor tiling certainly brings back memories, and the framed
posters on the walls are familiar to anyone who ever tilted a frosted mug in Normaltown.
A flashback from years ago: I had been downtown and was heading bade towards Hogan's
Hollow about 10:30 p.m. one night I thought "Why not stop at AUen's for a nightcap?" Two
good friends—Terry Melton and Joe Barnes—were tending bar that night I walked through the
front door into a totally empty AUen's. Joe was at one end of the bar and Terry was at the oth
er, both engrossed in a complete sulk. Sensing the hostility, 1 walked to the middle and after
a moment's silence, leaned over the bar, reached into the cooler and puUed out a Bud. I drank
my beer quickly and silently, put two dollar bills on the counter and got up to leave. Still not a
word from anyone. I never did ask Terry or Joe what they were fighting about—to me, AUen's
was always about the attitude. Tonight's show is free awl starts at 8 p.m. [Dan Johnson]
