WHAT TOFU IS.2
Tofu Baby is what it is. If you cannot under
stand or appreciate that, then obviously you are
not included in the upper 50th percentile of the
general population. Also note that bad, hateful
publicity is still publicity, so keep those letters
coming. Oh, and to the wife beatin' puppy hater,
my advice for you would be to get into your car,
place hose in tailpipe, open Flagpole to com
ics, and when you feel all that rage from a little
piece of tofu, do us all a favor and take a long,
deep breath. To all others, eat more tofu; maybe
you will all feel better about yourselves.

TOFU PUNK-ROCK
To David Marck [Letters, Aug. 15] and others
ragging on Tofu Baby all the time: Please get
over yourselves! I'm sorry you dislike Tofu Baby
so much. Tofu Baby is such a punk-rock comic. I
get a kick out of thinking about all the angry sad
souls all over town getting so bent out of shape
because of Missy's lovable little cube. I'm sorry
you have to blame Tofu Baby for all the world's
sins. I sure do miss "Service Industry," though.

NEW ORLEANS
Thank you to Donn Cooper and Flagpole for
such a thoughtful review of Sugarcane Academy
(and to Cooper for, in other pages, properly
praising the New Orleans sno-ball) [Aug. 15]. I
do want to add a bit more to the story: our deci
sion to move was a difficult and complicated
one that involved my wife's loss of a job, as well
as issues not related to Katrina, such as ailing
parents in the Midwest. (I didn't go into this part
very deeply in the book, maybe I should have—it
was pretty raw at the time.) Most importantly, I
want to stress that the decision was not made in
order to protect my kids from the struggles and
even traumas of New Orleans; in fact, we spent
a month back home this summer and return
frequently, because I believe this magical city
has more to teach my kids—and me—than ever
before. Despite my current exile in colder climes,
I continue to write about and report on life in
the city, and I encourage Flagpole readers to visit
New Orleans and see it all for yourself. The bars
on Magazine Street are always a good place to
begin.

ULTIMATE FARCE
Americans conveniently forget our own sins
and see the sins of others in a vacuum. We have
tunnel vision. I think we developed an unhealthy
attitude after WWII. It's not that we realized
that we needed to be more involved in foreign
affairs (wars or otherwise). That was a lesson,
thankfully well learned. But sadly, we became
hopelessly self-righteous, too.
Few people on Earth would not have granted
America a healthy dose of braggadocio after our
grand sacrifice in WWII. But now we have started
and fought a war for no reason at all. Even as
suming the worst possible potential of Saddam,
Iraq did not need to be occupied!
We supported Saddam Hussein when he
attacked Iran, and we supported Osama Bin
Laden (in Afghanistan) when he was fighting
the Russians. If he had wanted to pull a 9/11
on Moscow, would we have supported that?
Probably. That's why, despite the tragedy of it all,
this whole thing has been the ultimate farce.
